When I was a mere PlanLing growing up watching “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” I, too, bought into the disclaimer … at first, but one day truth prevailed and I realized it was an unfortunate fiction.
Thanks for the input…just as an aside, i had called information in the 60’s for the phone #, something i had planned to reference when i grew up, and got an actual phone #! I was thinking all of these yrs that i had either hallucinated it or the org was real…i just checked a site, and it said that the u.n. had hired someone to handle just such inquiries…it seems as if i’m not a psycho after all!!!

What about SMERSH?
SMERSH was real. It was a Soviet military counterintellegence organization in the 1930s and '40s. Among other things, they were probably involved in the murder of Trotsky. They later got absorbed into the GRU, with some of their responsibilities turned over to the NKVD/KGB.
SMERSH was a real organization, albeit a short lived one. It was formed in 1943 and disbanded in 1946 with its personnel being absorbed back into the NKVD.
Despite this, there were at least two well known people who continued to refer to SMERSH as an active organization. One was Ian Fleming, who portrayed SMERSH as an enemy of his creation James Bond. The other was L. Ron Hubbard, who wrote that SMERSH was the main agency in the Soviet Union directing attacks against his church.
Putting these two facts together, one can credibly speculate that James Bond was secretly a Scientologist.
