Say U.N.C.L.E.

They’re making “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”, and the trailer looks good! They are neither modernizing it nor spoofing it up, and the leads look good.

As a little girl, I picked Napoleon Solo as my first TV boyfriend (my sister had just picked Ilya Kuryakin, who turned out to be hotter, but who knew in elementary school?). We would have neighborhood-wide spy games, making those radio communicators out of found Marlboro boxes, and chirp “Open channel D!” into them. I begged for a Secret Sam spy briefcase for Christmas. We loved that show.

That trailer looks just different and lively enough that it could be good, and even be true to the spirit of the original. The music sounds wonderful.

My cousins and I invented our own spy network based on Man from U.N.C.L.E., had ideas for all sorts of nifty spy devices. Napolean Solo’s sophistication was a draw, but I always thought there was something slimey about him. But we adored Ilya Kuryakin. Sigh. I still think David McCallum is hot, even though he’s over 80 now.
Will definitely see the movie, even though Hugh Grant doesn’t have the (for lack of a better word) gravitas to be Mr. Waverly. He’s no Leo G. Carroll.

He certainly did an impressive job channelling Robert Vaughn, I thought.

2 things I spotted right off that I don’t like. 1) They’re using those Hollywood pistol “silencers” that are about the size of a champagne bottle cork and B) they’re NOT using the original Man From U.N.C.L.E. theme.

Oh, awesome…

I love the idea of setting it back in the 60’s.

I wish they had gone back to the original Man from U.N.C.L.E. idea of using pistols that shot knockout darts instead of bullets. That idea was so cool … it implied moral superiority to the bad guys from the get-go.

Yes, even as a wee lad when I watched I had the same sense about him, although for me at least it was about Vaughn, the actor. This held true even in later roles like The Magnificent Seven and Bullitt.

He had a role in a TMS remake, will he appear anywhere in TMFUNCLE? (I had problems w/ link)

The SO gave me the boxed set for Christmas. I loved the show as a small child! I recently bought a Husky 1/43 scale *Man From U.N.C.L.E. car like I had when I was five. I’ve only watched three discs (nine episodes) so far. I’m looking forward to getting to Season 2, which is in colour; but I’m kind of dreading the turn toward ‘campiness’ because it was more ‘serious’ to me when I was little. But it’s a great touchstone to my wonderful childhood!

I wonder if the movie will stay with the formula, where in every episode there was an ‘innocent’ who got caught up in the world of espionage.

I thought he was super.

Cool.

That looks like Tara King’s car on The Avengers (a Maserati, I think), except hers was red. I never realized Napoleon and/or Illya had one too!

TMFU car was an AMT Pirhana.

When I imagined myself as Illya, I always had on a black turtleneck and a shoulder holster.

I got a THRUSH sniper rifle for Christmas 1964 or '65. Years later, I still had my UNCLE identification badge, but it somehow vanished around the time I was in high school. Damn!

Tara King drove a Lotus Europa, my favourite car ever

I was too young even for the reruns, was this the premise for the original? That an American & Russian spy had teamed up? McCallum was supposed to be Russian?

Yes, indeed. The United Network Command for Law and Enforcement was an international organization set up to combat threats like THRUSH:

Presumably, they could have taken on SPECTRE and KAOS as well.

Yes! He’s got VERY much the right vibes! This has promise!

Favorite Man from U.N.C.L.E. reference:

from NCIS

That Solo usually boinked (implied, off screen, and after the villain was defeated). Napoleon was an even bigger horndog than Jim Kirk. I loved it when he got shot down by Illya.
