I just watched this for a second time on dvd last night and for now it has set the ultimate bar( to me anyways) regarding movies dealing with the three musketeers( four with D’artangan).

While Leo was damm good as Louis/Felipe , it brought home the the point that while I dont like him much from his characters , at least the man can act. To me he was incidental in the movie.

So the boys are older now and joints ache, some things dont work anymore , kidney stones are making one wonder why a cleaner death in battle may have been a more preferable ending.

So I was thinking to myself ,is this the ultimate guy movie.

Or was it simply a matter of four actors who had the right amount of chemistry and gravitas for the roles.

I actually like the 1977 made-for-TV movie better. There was a Louis XIV I could really hate! (No Musketeers, though.)

But the 1998 film is at any right a damned sight better than the forgettable 1979 version.

I really have no idea which is closer to the book.
