This guy might have been smarter than he’s being given credit for. Perhaps he was going for something along the lines of a bang stick for squirrels. The idea is that you stab the critter with a bullet built in to the point end of a spear, and the bullet fires when the stabbing impact sets it off.

Kind of the same thing, if you squint a lot and don’t think about it.
