In The Man of Steel, the comic book reboot John Byrne did in 1986, Ma Kent makes the super-suit out of regular cloth, saying that over the years, “I’ve noticed that cloth right next to your skin doesn’t get torn.” As the Wiki page explains it: “It was later explained that the post-Crisis Superman’s body generated an invisible “aura” that surrounded him and contributed to his invulnerability. Objects held close to him, such as his costume, were protected from harm; his cape, meanwhile, could easily sustain damage in battle.”
I almost peed myself.
You’re both correct; Dibble’s version is the pre-reboot explanation of where Superman got his costume.
That “aura” thing goes at least as far back as the Barry Allen Flash, where they used it to explain away air friction burns.
There was a lot to like in the trailer but as I wrote, I am still not sold on the apparent tone of the movie. The flip side is Superman Returns was mediocre at best but had one of the most amazing teasers ever so anything is possible.
I am cautiously optimistic. Superman was my first superhero. It would be a shame if the character was besmirched by poor explication. The trailer looks promising, but they are designed to be so.
The first flight scene was captivating and looked as real as rain.
The trailer looks great. But was that Kevin Kostner as daddy Kent? Not big on KK, but maybe his role doesn’t take up much of the film.
You’re in luck, it’s actually Kevin Costner playing Pa Kent.
Are we sure it’s not Cevin Costner?
The whole “Man of Steel” thing is cannon, I know; but it also makes me wonder if we’ll have Superman starving the Ukraine into submission. (Admittedly, it’s been done - see “Red Son.”)
You’re all wrong, it’s Calvin Kostner, and he’s playing Ma Kent.
When I was a little kid, my parents were watching a newsmag like 20/20 or something, and I overheard the phrase “he ruled over the Russian people with an iron hand.” And as a fan of Inspector Gadget’s Dr. Claw, my mind was filled with literal imagery. They set me straight, but I still like my imaginary Russian dictator better than history’s real one.
Meh.
Though I’m totally on board with bearded superman and shirtless superman.
How does superman shave? Wouldn’t the blades break on his scruff? Does he have to shave with kryptonite?
I’m really not big on Pa Kent’s attitude, there. To me, it’s an integral part of Superman’s character that his parents done raised him right. Pa Kent would never have told Clark that he should just let people die.
Shit, your right! That is kind of weird and kool.
He didn’t tell him that, though. He said ‘maybe…’ with his body language showing his uncertainty.
He’s more worried about protecting his son at the moment. A natural parental instinct. Especially when your son could be taken away by black choppers and split down the middle like a lab frog. Maybe…
His delivery shows he knows it’s not the best answer. No doubt he has an arc of his own.
I think the trailer looks stunning! I’m not a big Superman fan, so I wasn’t all that excited. This has changed my mind. Can’t wait.
It’s interesting to me that Superman fans seem split but the non-fans seem positive.
Still, I can already imagine the reviews. “Joyless” and “An unsuccessful retread of the Dark Knight formula” are things I can see critics writing.
I think the best part is the intensity Henry Cavill brings to the part. He has the eyes of a caged animal, a fucking killer.
