"Man of Steel" trailer - set for release June 2013 looks pretty hot!

Check it out!

Not even a hint of the John Williams score-I like it.

I really hope the rest of the movie lives up to the visuals, because I absolutely cannot wait. Don’t break my heart, movie.

As someone who enjoyed Superman Returns for what it was (a fitting finale after the grandeur of I & II and the abominations of III & IV) I like what I’ve seen so far. And as much as I love the John Williams score (I loved that *Smallville *used it in its finale) as a true reboot this film has to stand on its own. I just hope Hans Zimmerman realizes that any Superman theme requires a three-note motif mimicking the syllabic structure of the word ‘su-per-man’…

I’m open to the possibility that I’ll enjoy it, but absolutely nothing that I’ve seen inspires any enthusiasm within me.

I saw the trailer. Then posted a tweet in response to seeing the trailer. Then came to the Dope and see this thread.

This was my tweet:

So apparently my reaction differed.

ETA: I’m with ya, obfusciatrist.

I hope the sense of self importance is just a marketing mistake and not in the movie itself. I really want this to be good.

OK, there’s at least four of us, so it’s not just me, then.

Nolan’s fingerprints are all over this, especially the desaturated look of the film. At least Marvel understand the trend back towards bright colours and larger-than-life fantasy.

So now Superman is an X-Man or Spider-Man? An angsty, outcast feared by authority figures? How original…

Well, really he’d have more reason to feel that way than mutants. I mean, he is alone…

That said, a good trailer means nothing. I’ll wait till the real deal.

To be fair, his father was Robin Hood, and his other father was also Robin Hood.

Eh, Superman is so overpowered that if he doesn’t have some sort of internal struggle, there isn’t really much left to make a movie out of. He can only spend so much screen time punching some other slightly less powerful superpowered guy through buildings before it gets boring.

He was pretty angsty in Superman II, which is still the only good Superman movie.

Why shouldn’t he be? If there’s someone paranoid, fearful humans should fear and distrust, it would be Superman, not Spidey.

That looks fantastic. The bit where he’s freaking out over his super hearing is a promising window into the thoughtfulness of the script for me. Also Pa Kent’s “Maybe” made me sit up and take notice. We might have a great story here.

And we’re actually going to see Superman flex his power and punch people. Finally. The DC universe has it’s share of interesting characters that can challenge Superman, BTW. And the less powerful ones sometimes result in the best stories because they endanger his people. Superman is a guardian hero, not a warrior hero, but this looks to be a solid mix.

That little detail with the swirling, levitating particles just before he takes off is lovely.

Comic book movies hold no fascination for me at all but I will be there to see this one with bells on. Henry Cavill is smoking hot. Delicious.

It does look surprisingly dark for a Superman film. I’m not against a serious treatment of the character, but I feel that he really needs a bit more light and colour and optimism in the mix. Perhaps that’s just the trailer, of course, but I’d like to see more of a contrast with the Dark Knight.

Also, I really don’t like the costume. I was prepared for it being different, and I thought I’d be able to accept whatever changes they made, but that texture’s really bothering me. I was happy enough when the Raimi films gave Spider-Man’s suit a subtle texture – it actually looked like some sort of high-tech fabric, and that was fine. This though… this looks knitted. Even the boots, for god’s sake. It looks like Superman’s flying around in a romper suit his Grandma made.

I normally fucking hate Superman but I thought that trailer was the dopest dope I’ve ever smoked. Whether that means that the movie will be awesome or that they just made a really great trailer remains to be seen.

Canonically, doesn’t Supes fly around in his Kryptonian baby blankets put together by Ma Kent with Supe’s help?

I seem to remember a Superboy comic where Ma Kent made a second suit with the leftover bits, that had yellow as the main colour, and that weakened Superboy because all that yellow sunlight was getting reflected. No, really.

Diane Lane may be older, but she’s nobody’s Ma. Then again, neither was Annette O’Toole (rowr!)

I’m cautiously optimistic, overall. Didn’t like Returns, but that was for Spacey’s horrible Luthor and a stupid plotline, I thought Routh did fine as Supes and even didn’t mind Bosworth as Lois (never liked Kidder, anyway)
