Manfred Mann's "Blinded By the Light" - guitar solo question

I was putting together a 70’s CD to listen to at work during lunch. One of my favorites from that era is Manfred Mann’s rendition of Springsteen’s “Blinded By the Light” (long version).

There’s a part in the middle where the line “But mama, that’s where the fun is” is repeated several times while a trippy guitar riff is being played.

Question: how does the guitarist get this sound? Is he actually playing that fast or is he using some sort of effects pedal? Or both?

It’s just hammering on and off very quickly. Not as tough as it sounds really.

After further experimentation I’d say it’s a hammer on and pull off actually.
