Truly missed indeed. His posts & contributions were thought-provoking, his moderating of GQ fair-minded & his beer-drinking abilities well above par. I join the chorus of those who wish him well, lament his departure and hope to see him again in the future. For those who question the reasoning behind his depature, (in this thread and in the pit), I’ll offer this analogy: Only the most foolish dogs who find their bedding infested with fleas stay put and scratch their skin raw. The wiser & more reasonable ones get up and move on to less annoying environs.
In honor of manhattan, I encourage all those who people who will miss him – whether they always found themselves in accordance with his views or not – to ‘hang out the flag’ in message board format by:
Formatting all their posts for the next month to: Align Right
I found Liberal’s post thought provoking. This board claims to fight ignorance. But what is ignorance? Whatever the majority on here disagree with? I wonder sometimes. :dubious:
Most members tend towards the left side- but I think the board is more libertarian (note small case “l”) than Liberal. The board tends to be Pro-choice, pro-gun, anti-tax, anti-administration, anti-war in Iraq, and anti-large Government. That strong anti-gun control bias takes the "mean’ poster out of the classic “Liberal” camp.
The board also tends to be anti-organized religion. Not “anti-faith” by any means, but organized religion takes a lot of hits.
No, it tends to be more libertarian than **conservative **(in the American sense), but it still has many, many liberal (or leftist) posters. What there are few of, is social conservatives.
To put an even finer point on it, there are few social conservatives on this board that are willing to identify themselves by participating in debates/discussions due to the futility of such an excercise.
It’s rather churlish of you at the very least to throw stones in a thread that was written to thank manhattan for his many years of devoted service to the Straight Dope community.
Manny brought a lot to the Straight Dope and he will be missed. If that’s more than you can handle then you shouldn’t be reading this thread in the first place.
Your behavior is our of line in this thread and exactly the kind of rude and nasty behavior that makes people reconsider being here in the first place.
There’s places on this board where you disagree with someone all day long. This was a poor choice for you to make here.
If you can’t say something nice in this thread, then take it somewhere else.
You owe the board – and Manhattan, most of all – an apology.
I never interacted much with manhattan (or anyone else, for that matter) in political threads, and if I had, I probably would have disagreed with him on many points. But I did interact with him (and with many other of our fine posters) in other threads, where I can say that he made a strong and positive contribution to the boards. For those contributions, as a moderator, staffer, and member, he will be missed.
In my own opinion, the purpose of this thread seemed to be, as indicated by the title, was to announce that Manny had resigned. An expression of gratitude from Ed Zotti was part of the OP, but not necessarily the primary focus. Nevertheless, I understand why many of the comments belong in another thread.
I’m sorry we never met or had a chance to share a cold beer or smoke a Camel or two together.
Oh wait… We did!
Do what you must. I don’t much agree with your politics, but I know you’re a mensch and I know you’re my friend.
I’ll miss your hip-shootin’ brand of smackdown. You are welcome in my casa anytime (along with your SO!) and we need not talk of politics or ideologies while you’re here.
Stuff and nonsense. I just said he was a wimp for saying he was stopping posting because because the board wasn’t “a comfortable place” for politically conservative posters.
Since Roger Thornhill isn’t pointing it out himself, I will. I doubt that he disagreed with Manhattan on very many political points. Mr. Thornhill has a somewhat conservative perspective on many issues although I suspect he defies and would resent easy labelling.
