Well, this sucks. I’m a commie pinko liberal, but I really respect manhattan and appreciated his contributions. As well as the fact that he was cool in general. I really hope he reconsiders his decision to leave.
Good luck and thank you, manny.
Please reconsider and come back after a spell. I know you will be welcomed because Ed never said anything about retiring your jersey nor reassigning your parking spot.
Wow. Take things too seriously much? A person leaving a messageboard is like someone dying how? And a messageboard thread is like a funeral? With respect, wtf?
My comment was intended in jest. If I had’ve thought that that wasn’t apparent from the post itself and if I didn’t think smilies were stupid, then I would’ve put the relevant smilie in there to make it plain. To me, its pretty clear from the tone of my post that it wasn’t meant to be taken anywhere near as seriously as you’ve taken it.
A fond farewell to the “Fucking Hall Monitor”!
From one of the inmates on Fucking Hall, who will miss ya’…
Dani
(Come back soon, will you? … And when come back, bring pie)
God speed, Banhatten
No, no really:
Godspeed, Banhatten
Best of luck, Manhatten. I hope you reconsider. Unfortunately he’s not the first conservative to leave because he felt uncomfortable - Owlstretchingtime did not renew for similar reasons.
Well, that was only the third of the three reasons that he gave (and even then heavily qualified as “shrill 20-something year odl lefties”).
Here’s The Last Post from The Wolery in full for posterity.
Actually, I think there was more to his decision than meets the eye. Like Manhattan, perhaps he realised that his time had passed, that others had stepped in to his “niche” areas, as he puts it, and he found that difficult to handle.
Manny has made a lot of positive contributions to The Straight Dope.
I am going to miss him.
Another Doper who will miss the fucking hall monitor banhattan.
Manny’s contributions to The Straight Dope were and are legendary.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him on numerous occasions, and consider it a privilege to call him friend.
I wish him the very best in all his future endeavors.
You will be missed, my friend.
Best of luck, Manhattan, and yes, please do consider coming back after a break.
Hopefully we’ll run into one another at Red Rock again soon.
I respectfully request that the Mods & Admins e-mail a copy of this Thread to Manhattan.
Thank you.
I think I mentioned this in the thread when Manny resigned as a mod, but it’s worth repeating:
In 1999 I was in the Taiwan earthquake and lost power, phone, etc. for a week. Hundreds were killed in my town alone. When I was able to get back online, I found that none of my freinds or immediate family had been concerned enough to try and get in touch with me. It was depressing, to put it mildly.
I did, however, have email from two posters I barely knew, and a thread started by Manny asking if I was okay. It meant a lot.
If I was one of the people who for whom the SDMB is basically a social setting (the IMHO/MPSIMS set), it’d be less surprising. But I was, then and now, mostly a GD arguer, and not an especially good, popular or well-known one, and yet people had that level of concern.
There’s no question the tone has changed; and I don’t think it’s a purely political thing. In the end, you can have the kind of place that attracts Manhattans or the kind of plece that attracts reeders. The SDMB has chosen the latter.
Or, you can have the kind of place that attracts both a Manhattan and a reeder. The SDMB is such a place.
Bye, Manny. I hate to see you go, but if you feel this is the right choice I can respect it. Take care and best of luck to you.
Hasta luego, manhattan. You’ve been a bright spot.
It’s my NSHO that no matter what your political leanings, you should visit places frequented by your political opponents. Not necessarily so that you’ll be swayed to think like them, but so that you can appreciate their POV. It’s healthy to listen to the “other side.” Of course, if you’re the only one in the group who marches to a different drummer, it makes you feel isolated.
I guess that’s the point Manny has gotten to, which is a shame. I hope he’ll come back after a brief sabattical.
Um, was. Manhattan is gone.
Another one bites the dust. I for one can certainly understand why he left.
Good luck in all things, Manny.
No, you can’t; Manny’s leaving, q.e.d. Like a lot of us, he was attracted here at a time where there were far, far fewer ignorant assholes on the boards, but stuck around even when it started to change. I think it’s safe to say that were he to surf in here now for the first time, he’d never have joined.
The SDMB has chosen to interpret “Jerk” such that the buffoons can stay so long as they are polite about it. Yeah, I believe in freedom of speech, too; but I don’t go to buffoon rallies and I don’t invite them in my house.
GD and the Pit nowadays are like going to a party where you know several interesting people will be … but also a handful of loudmouth bores. After awhile it stops being worth it.
