I think they mostly see the convicted criminals promising not to do it again, or at least exercising their right to be silent.

At that point Katie bailed because the guy seemed on the cusp of losing it.

Judge Merchan seems composed and evenhanded enough to know that any sentence deemed excessive by the Appeals Court won’t hold up.
