Manhattan Prosecutors file criminal charges for Trump re Stormy Daniels case - ongoing discussion here (Guilty on all 34 counts, May 30, 2024)

I memed that for you (before PhillyGuy’s post contradicted the claim about Eric).

Also, “Everyone knows my entire strategy is to delay and stall forever! Unfair!”

On the election interference angle, it doesn’t matter if it can be shown that it plausibly wouldn’t have changed the election results. It only matters that the Orange Felon-to-be thought it would damage his election prospects, that this would have been a reasonable thing to believe, and that he therefore sought to hide the Stormy Daniels affair for that reason.

That website has a very good profile of the case. I hope Trump receives a fair trial, like any other defendant. I am not convinced of his guilt in this case, because of the oddity of New York State’s falsifying business records allegation, as related to a federal crime that Trump has not been charged with.

I agree that the article is well written, and the authors also believe that Bragg has a strong case (point #2 in the article). Three of the four allegations are a slam-dunk, and they believe Bragg has the upper hand on the fourth, “Trump’s intent to commit or conceal another crime, as the law requires to be elevated to the felony first-degree falsification of business records”. They cite examples of many such charges being successfully brought and convictions secured.

My discomfort is mostly due to my own ignorance and lack of familiarity with the topic. Just Security thinks Bragg has a strong case, though they note there’s some debate on the matter. Over in FC I asked about how old this business records law is. It dates to at least 1930.

Watching a rerun of “Anderson Cooper 360,” on CNN, which aired earlier this evening. They’re showing aerial coverage of the Trump motorcade leaving the courthouse and heading back home, as the chyron says. Trump Tower apparently. Anyway, there are at least five big black SUVs, being led by a police car. I’d guess they are Chevy Suburbans or Tahoes.

Does he need that many up-to-seven-passenger-cars? I understand that he has Secret Service protection, but at least 30 agents? Or is it just another Trumpian, “Look at how important I am” thing, where there are only two agents per car?

I also wonder how many less-famous defendants leave that courthouse, and just get on the subway.

This probably deserves its own thread if there’s more discussion, but I don’t really consider that a problem. Per my understanding of security protocols for very important people (and regardless of how much of a dipshit Trump is, he objectively qualifies), you want to have several identical vehicles so it’s not immediately obvious to the Bad Guys which one is carrying the VIP. Trump probably inflates this for ego reasons (“Obama had six? I want seven!”), but as a practice it’s sound.

Good point, and that makes sense. Thank you!

I made a joke on Twitter - on Eric Trump’s account - regarding his complaint about the mean old judge not letting dear old dad attend Barron’s graduation: “What excuse did your dad use to skip your graduation?”

I didn’t even know if he actually did skip it, but then again … there you go.

“Well, he was evicting a black family. Look, you’ve gotta have priorities.”

As noted a few posts up, the Orange Fuck has never attended any of his kids’ graduations, though for some reason he feels a pressing need to attend one now. Maybe the America-hating orange fuckstick has suddenly turned into a decent person who cares about his children and his country. Maybe the moon will fall into the Pacific ocean tomorrow while my dog rises on his hind legs and performs an exquisite presentation of a Tango canyengue.

And this is one of those situations where I hope Merchan starts putting an end to this bullshit, just like what should have happened when he asked to leave court for Ivana’s funeral.
Merchan said he would allow Trump the day off to attend Barron’s graduation as long as things are on schedule. But I’d love if he also added either “but you must attend the graduation” or even better “but you can’t attend a rally or play golf”.

PhillyGuy provided a cite that Trump did attend Tiffany’s graduation. Why hers specifically, I don’t know.

Barron breathes a sigh of relief as the judge denies trump’s appeal pause the trial so he can embarrass him at his high school graduation.

Is there a mechanism in which Trump could attend the graduation, but under escort, so that that’s all he’s able to do?

And the Don’s in the courtroom nodding out at noon
His son Barron trump is gonna graduate soon
“Gonna make it to my grad, dad?” “I don’t know, son”
"The witchhunt has just begun
you know they want to see me done."

AIUI, by end of day 1 not one juror has been selected and a number have stated that they can’t be objective. Going into the remainder of the selection process, what if those who would qualify, are claiming that they can’t be objective because of fears of death threats, reputational damage etc, to the extent that a genuinely good jury just can’t be selected in a reasonable amount of time?

I think they just cast a wider net, and put more prospective jurors through the process until they get to the 12 + alternates they seek.

Luckily, this isn’t taking place in rural Montana

Yes, I realize that it won’t have any bearing on the outcome of the trial, and my crack about it being an “effective line of defense” was poorly thought out and written.

What I meant to convey is that the assurances that we have been given by some commentators that it’s more serious than the media characterizations of “hush money” and “covering up an affair” would suggest may not be as compelling to the electorate at large as we would like to hope.
