Why on earth did you move my last post here to Great Deabates??
I wasn’t asking “Why does God allow suffering”.
I was asking How do Christians respond when ASKED “Why does God allow suffering.”
WHAT ON EARTH is so ‘DEBATABLE’ about that? I mean maybe I could understand if you moved it to IMHO (maybe), but GD?? What exactly did you want people to debate over??
“When Christians are asked about it, they usually give ‘x’ answer.” <-- That’s what I am looking for.
Yeah… let’s ship this one straight to the debating Forum… ???
There are many different Christian beliefs and every belief may answer that question differently. And when you get different religious beliefs all expressing what they think is right, you’re going to end up with a debate. relax, would you, he didn’t close your thread, he moved it. It’s not the end of the world for you to click on another forum to see how your thread is doing.
And I’m sure you can expect this thread to be closed also, since complaints belong in the Pit.
I’m with you on this one. Some questions should be askable without becoming a survey (IMHO) debate (GD) or insult fest (BBQ Pit).
(Not that I have an answer, or even care about this question. I gave up on religious questions when I married a preacher’s daughter just as he was converting to agnosticism. You couldn’t get him to talk about anything else, so I got into the habit of walking out on these discussions.)
I’d say just wait a week and try again.
And this time make it clear that debaters can go to the now-dormant thread.
Quote Sgt. Friday- “No opinions. Facts. I just want the facts, Ma’am.”
It’s never easy getting the thread to follow the OP, so good luck.
That question is so open to interpretation, and is very very subjective. Like Crunchy has pointed out, Christians (or any other religious group) would have different answers to that question; there is no black and white ‘x’ answer.
That thread was about religious beliefs, and although we can occasionally cover such topics in a factual manner, it’s rare. Most religious discussions do end up in GD… Don’t feel singled out.
Meanwhile, this thread is not a General Question, either: It’s a criticism of the administration of this board. We have a place specifically for that, in the BBQ Pit. I’m moving this there.
Wow, MadHatter has a problem with Manhattan. Up is down, down is up, my whole world is filled with confusion and wonder. How will I make sense of this tragic new development?
Um, Yeah. Which is why we have GQ. But if you post a question that is a survey it belongs in IMHO. If you post a question that is a debate it goes to GD. How Christians respond to the Problem of Evil has been debated for thousands of years. And we all know where debates go.
I’d strongly discourage you from doing that. Reposting a thread in GQ knowing full well that the moderators feel that thread doesn’t belong there is an annoying pointless execrise and will only anger the mods.
Why are you getting so upset at having your thread moved, Hatter? Feel free to read and respond to the answers provided in your thread. You’ll be much better served having that thread in GD than in GQ.
I would imagine that if the thread has truly moved away from the OP, and is now impossible to hijack back to answering his question, and he is truly dissatisfied with the answers given thus far, it would not be overly wrong to start a better-worded GQ thread to address the factual issues involved (with a link to the GD thread for those who want to debate the issue). You’d be on pretty shaky ground, though, so it would probably be a good idea to email one of the GQ moderators for permission first. Otherwise they would likely get annoyed for the reasons mentioned by Alpha.
I have to say that as soon as I saw the thread in question in GQ, I knew it would get moved to GD. “The Problem of Evil,” as Alphagene said, has been debated for centuries. Definitely not a general question.
In addition, 'Hatter, you have to admit that your OP question was very short, and left a lot of room open for interpretation.
I would agree that a more-specifically worded question seems to be in order, and I also agree that it’d be a good idea to ask for permission. Even though you wouldn’t be intending it as such, the appearance of cross-posting and “spamming” could come up (and, as has been seen with regards to a certain site proclaiming immortality, repeated thread starting is frowned upon).
“How Christians respond to the Problem of Evil has been debated for thousands of years.”
No it hasn’t. How they SHOULD respond has been debated. If I wanted to start a debate, I would of asked how SHOULD Christians respond when asked that question. That’s not what I was asking.
I was asking HOW do they respond. HOW THEY RESPOND is not debated. There are clear cut FACTS on how Christians respond to that question. WHY GOD ALLOWS suffering, on the other hand, IS DEBATABLE.
Anyone who disagrees with me here is not seeing logic.
How is this question any different then asking how do Muslims respond when a fellow Muslim marries a Christian? HOW THEY RESPOND is not debated. There are clear cut FACTS. HOW SHOULD THEY RESPOND is debated.
I disagree; you are clearly wrong in this case. Your OP, in the thread in question, was one sentence: “How do Christians respond when you ask them ‘Why does God allow human suffering?’.”
You appear to assume, incorrectly, that all Christians respond in the same way, an assumption whose fallacy CrunchyFrog clearly points out right away: “Everyone is going to have a different answer for this I think.”
There are going to be numerous different responses, irrespective of whether you assumed so (or not). Did you truly, honestly think that there would be an answer as simple as, “Why yes, there was a Gallup poll done three months ago on this very question, and X% of Christians believe this, and Y% believe that, and Z% believe the other”? Because there’s going to be a lot of minority points of view, and numerous qualification, and people debating who is really a Christian, and what is suffering, really?
You are apparently expecting a clear-cut answer where there really is none. Even if, say, someone did his or her doctoral dissertation on this subject, I expect a lot of people would debate the validity of the study. Why would you not expect a debate over your question?
What the fuck is the difference which goddamn forum it’s in? The moderator, who is the ultimate arbiter, has decided it’s a Great Debate topic, so it’s a Great Debate. End of story. You’re really starting to get on my nerves, MadHatter. Your incessant, puerile caviling about the Evil Moderator Cabal® is getting old. And boring.
zut
“There are going to be numerous different responses, irrespective of whether you assumed so (or not).”
Well, if that is the case, THEN THAT IS THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION.
“Why would you not expect a debate over your question?”
Because there is nothing to be debated. Even if the answer is “Hatter, there is no answer to this question.” THEN THAT WOULD STILL BE THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION.
Think of it this way:
In soccer, does a goal count as one point? = GQ
In soccer, should a goal count as one point? = GD
If I punched a cop, would it be illegal? = GQ
If I punched a cop, should it be illegal? = GD
How would the Vatican respond if I said that Satan was actually God? = GQ
How should the Vatican respond if I said that Satan was actually God? = GD
Meaning…
HOW DO Christians respond when you ask them “Why does God allow human suffering?” = GQ
HOW SHOULD Christians respond when you ask them “Why does God allow human suffering?” = GD
It is clear, cut and simple. There is a clear cut answer to my question. Therefore, GQ was the appropriate place to put it.
No one disputes that the BBQ pit is the proper place to bitch about the mods, Maddie. However, you whine about manhattan like he’s the pageant judge for Okie Mulch Queen and you didn’t even make runner-up for Miss Congenital. Give it a rest once in a while.
So the one time it appears as though I have proven that manhattan has done something wrong, I get “Give it a rest once in a while” thrown at me. I just can’t win can I?
