Manny, I had NOT just typed “Regarding” as the title!
I typed "Regarding “Speech” & “Boredom”
WHAT HAPPENED??

Thread titles don’t like quotes.
Oh, what a dope am I…
jally, here’s a bit of unsolicited advice for your future use. If you need to ask a moderator a specific question, it’s infinitely preferable to just e-mail that person. Starting a thread for this is considered bad form.
I do understand this particular question is about a message board function and could conceivably benefit posters other than you. In that case, a question such as this could also be properly placed in the “About This Message Board” forum.
Now then, the answer given above by Smeghead is only partially correct. The full answer may be found in the ATMB forum at this url: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=30833
First of all, I think the instructions about quotes should have been included in FAQ.
Second of all, the problem happened in GQ, so I thought it was appropriate to make reference to it here, because unfortunately SDMB does not allow editing (which imho is quite inconvenient. other boards allow editing, why not SDMB? OK, I know it’s open to abuse of artificially pumping one’s post to the top. Still & all…
Finally, thanks for your link (though not sure I understood it). Actually, before even before reading your link, I’d noticed that other people had been successful using quotes in titles. And so I hopped over to the test forum & tried ampersand quot semicolon and that worked for me, whereupon I hopped back to GQ & reposted the OP with quotes.
jally, the issue of quotes is not covered in the FAQ since it’s a bug; not a feature. Hopefully someday it’ll go away.
Now you know different; like I said I was providing advice, not criticizing.
The issue of allowing users to edit their posts has been discussed here many times. Go the the ATMB forum and try searching for the word “edit.” It’ll turn up several threads on this subject and explain our reasons for disabling this feature. Other boards allow editing, fine; we don’t. Other boards allow many things that we choose not to. Every board is different and has differing priorities.
And you have reposted the same topic, now? I can tell you right off that’s not going to please anyone. Again, the proper course of action in this situation is to e-mail the forum moderator and ask to have your thread corrected. We are happier to do that than to have to delete or lock multiple threads. What’s going to happen now is that you’ll get responses in both threads. Can you see how confusing that will quickly become? I suggest you notify Manhattan and ask him to close the mistitled instance.
Again, all of this is advice, not criticism. Please don’t take it that way.
Since UncleBeer has given you such execellent advice, including a link to the proper forum for such information, I’ll just close this thread to create some room on the front page.
And he’s right. In the future, please direct technical questions about board matters to email or to About This Message Board.
