Interesting story. I remember flying in Arequipa from the southeast, and the airline went waaay out over the ocean and then swung back to the east to head back inland. I thought, “What the hell was that about? Seems kinda round-a-bout.”
Then, when we landed, I figured it out quick. The locals make a good living charging people to fly over and see the Nazca lines. They don’t want nobody seeing them for free!
Did the idiot trucker hit 'em?
A lot of Peruvians going to Arequipa are local, would love to see the Nazca lines, and could not possibly afford a private flight. Seems pretty petty to bypass them, if they did. But how far out of your way would you have to go?
Anyway, the discovery is pretty exciting. Some of the glyphs are cool. There would be money to be made by putting the best ones on caps and t-shirts, since this is the best way to show appreciation for ancient art and spirituality.
