If you’re only paying attention to the reveals of Slendy, you’re missing the story. There’s a great deal of subtle story development there.
Watched them all today. Found it very interesting.
I have a question, but I don’t know if I should ask it, since it seems not everyone has watched to the end yet…
BTW, there are also short videos from totheark that have to be watched too.
.
Spoiler the question!
ETA: (Meaning, use Spoiler tags.)
It has to do with the house…
The first time he goes to the house, it’s at night and he finds all kinds of blood all over the bathroom. Yet he goes back again, and again at night. How stupid is this guy? On this visit, the blood is cleaned up, but he gets attacked. Then he goes back a third time, albeit in the daytime for a change. He really seems like a glutton for punishment, but I don’t think the average reasonable person would have even gone back after the first time.
I remember reading the Slender Man thread as it first evolved. It was really quite gripping and spooky. I loved some of the woodcuts from sightings back during the days of the Black Death. If you didn’t know it was being made up as it was you’d think it was a real phenomenon.
Well,
he’s an investigator. He’s not exactly reasonable. He’s motivated to get to the bottom of the mystery, and that is what gets him in trouble, of course. Just like all Lovecraft’s investigative protagonists getting involved with ancient death cults and mysterious, eldritch happenings, etc. in order to find out what happened to their rich uncle/nephew/best friend/colleague/long-time correspondent/what have you. It’s the nature of the type of story.
As for going back at night the second time, yeah. I was a little leery of that too. Especially when the space-time anomalies started cropping up before he was attacked. Time to leave, dude!
I was starting to think the guy’s dumber than Tonto…
“Tonto, you go to town!”
Well, sure. It takes a certain obtuseness to continue pursuing an otherwordly horror from the Outer Dark after you’re already aware that it’s watching you. Honestly, given that it had already appeared several times in broad daylight, well fuck it. In for a penny, etc. “I’ll just swing by the late-night drive-thru at Taco Bell and then go explore the haunted, spooky rift in space-time with a shitty flashlight. Want me to bring you back a quesadilla and some ectoplasm?”
Thanks for sharing, Ogre. I’ve had fun watching all the entries over the past 2 days.
Would you have a link, by chance?
The Slender Man was created out of whole cloth by a poster named Victor Surge on the Something Awful forums. His first post was on page 3 of this thread. Now there are literally hundreds of 'shopped photos, fanart pieces, etc. out there devoted to him (and they vary WIDELY in quality, needless to say).
Just watched the series last night. I was laughing throughout most of it, especially the visually distorted bedroom scenes that he “doesn’t remember”, but the creepiness sets in once you’re done and actually start to imagine what it would be like to actually experience that stuff first-hand. Gives you the willies.
The “narrator” also has a twitter account #marblehornets that adds to the story.* I’ve heard from the narrator on the SA boards, and the story isn’t over yet. Stay tuned.
Thanks, Ogre, for starting this thread. I’ve been a fan of MH since almost the beginning, but didn’t think anyone on the SDMB knew about it.
*It’s interesting (to me) to note that one of Jay’s (the narrator) twitter followers is #totheark. But #totheark hasn’t posted anything to twitter and doesn’t let anyone follow him. The #marblehornets account is also the only one he follows.
And to those who think it’s too slow/subtle, it REALLY picks up in the later entries.
ETA: Remember, this series is being done by a group of college students strictly for the enjoyment of doing it. Taking that into consideration, I think it’s remarkably well-done. Roger Ebert agrees. http://twitter.com/ebertchicago/status/5495205792
I get a 404 on his review page.
Edit: Duh, nm. Followed the link from the Tweet and that isn’t working for me either. I tried Googling results off the suntimes.com site and it’s not turning up there.
ETA: never mind. I just saw your ETA, Ferret.
I checked his blog’s archive and found the entry immediately after the date of the Hornets review. The first comment says something about his blog being all messed up, and he replies that he had issues getting online and now it’s been fixed. I wonder if it got lost in the process?
How…mysterious! The Slender Man is after Ebert!
Perhaps the Slender Man is… Siskel’s ghost? :dubious:
is #26 the last entry?
