There’s also Entry ####
But that’s a totheark post, not one of the actual “Entries” by Marble Hornets. According to the recommended viewing order here, the totheark videos are interspersed throughout the Entry series, with ### coming between Entries 24 and 25.
Ah yes, you’re right. Entry 26 is it, then.
The blog has been missing for quite some time. I guess Ebert knew too much. And now he’s trying to forget…
So is this whole thing “done?” Or is this still an ongoing thing?
There have been recent hints that the saga will continue.
I’ve heard it refered to as an “ARG.” What is that?
I’ve seen that too, and I’m not sure. “Alternate Reality Game” seems like a poor fit…
[Sorry for the vague necro I figure it’s new enough to not start a new thread]
ARG indeed means Alternate Reality Game. It is a poor fit because the most back and forth interaction is just J saying “wow, you guys were right!” Though I guess there is a post on the Something Awful forums that answered a couple questions, but that’s about as ARG-y as it got. The totheark videos do have a certain game to them that you have to decipher (or read the wiki) to get the most out of, but it still doesn’t amount to much.
Marble Hornets is really the granddaddy of high profile Slendy content on the web, but it lacks ARG aspects. The Just Another Fool blog is a lot more ARG-y, even going so far as promoting one of the players from the unfiction forums to main character. Everyman Hybrid (which the creators of Marble Hornets say is their favorite spiritual successor so far) is VERY ARG-y, with one of the involved characters responding directly to comments on her blog, and live UStream chats with the main cast happening occasionally. The main videos in the series also seem to superficially address the viewers as well.
I’ve been enjoying Sledy stuff recently, even if the whole “the more you know about him, the more likely he is to hunt you” thing makes it a little paranoia inducing. I do hope they get on with Season 2 of Marble Hornets soon though.
Many mornings I go for a walk around 5am. It can be creepy if I happen to be thinking of Marble Hornets. One morning I was cutting through the breeze way in the middle of an apartment building. As I was exiting the other side, I went past the stairs to the upper apartments and looked back. On the stairs right behind me was a kid in his early 20’s. But he was over 6’ tall and skinny as a rail. He was also standing very still and silent. I think he was listening to a cell phone. Gave me a real shock appearing as he did right behind me.
I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but a new season started a week or two ago. Just a heads up.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Very cool - I appreciate the notice, Jragon!
On #27 did the girl in the hallway come out of the same room he went into?
No, she came out from next door.
Thank you!
It’s up to Entry 31 now. And #29 is a bit interesting.
And we’ve come full circle, folks. Jay is now looking at old videos he was involved in and has no recollection of. Not to say that’s a BAD thing, but it is interesting.
Also, I wonder if he’s going to find traces of that one girl (name escapes me) in those tapes. Probably.
I put in spoiler tags in case some haven’t seen the latest entries yet.
#35 pretty much confirmed what everyone knew, that
Masky was Tim. Sideburns for the win!
They’re saying on unfiction and Something Awful that:
Alex hit Tim/Masky in the knee with the rock, and that’s why he’s seen limping when he attacks Jay in the hotel. In any case, Tim screams like a girl.
I’m glad to see the action picking up again after those “placeholder” episodes in the hotel. I would like to see the Operator a little more, though. Also, it’s good to see totheark back in all his cryptic glory.
Lastly, I can only hope that after rolling around on that floor, they have their tetanus shots up to date.
To be perfectly honest, the hotel episodes were some of my favorite. My favorite Marble Hornets episodes are the ones where nothing happens. At all. Masky being a Diabolus ex Machina bitch is kind of getting old. Not TOO old, but I am getting rather tired of him appearing to foul everything up. Also, I wonder if Jessica could possibly be one of the four Maskies shown in the season finale (and could Jay be another?).
Though I do agree that more Operator would be good. Or at least something BEHIND the Operator. I think 90% of it is I want to know why he’s called that. The Operator is really one of the most effective villains of all time. It’s certainly impressive that he can be so primally intimidating just by standing there, menacingly. Oh, and sometimes slowly sauntering towards the camera. I’d also like to see a more explicit connection between Masky and the Operator. I don’t want some plot exposition dump, mind you, I just want something that makes it a tiny bit more clear what’s going on. Is Masky “with” the Operator? Is it willing? Mind Control insanity? There have been some theories based on some totheark footage that perhaps Masky is actually PROTECTING Jay, in some kind of weird way.
Specifically, in the episode where Jay was passed out in the hall some postulated that it looked like Masky was distracting the Operator away from Jay, rather than being an accomplice. There’s also some ideas that the package was sent to Jay in 26 to help him. Further, if you read into Masky’s actions correctly it can work in a way. He could have been scaring Jay away from the house, and generally preventing him from making progress because making progress makes the Operator hate you more. If he was trying to prevent Jay from taking the new tapes, well, viewing tapes does NOT have a positive effect in this series. I don’t have an explanation for:
the attempted knifing in the recent episode. Although I suspect it could be explained by if there’s something wrong with Alex, and Tim was just trying to PROTECT Jay in some odd form. I got a distinct vibe that Alex was not how he should have been, however it’s entirely possible that Alex was just finally standing up for himself. I can’t really blame him.
I guess we had our “big revelation” for the next few episodes, but everybody knew it already, so it didn’t feel that great. I’m hoping for this season to shed a little light on just one of these:
A. The Operator’s role/name
B. Masky’s affiliation
C. The meaning behind the ark symbolism
I think those are some of the key points in the series that need to be touched upon before the series degrades into compounding question upon question without ever answering them, that’s the surest way to make the series suddenly become stagnant.
