Yes, but at the time, representative government was a pretty novel idea, they had no idea how well the leadership would turn out, and they probably wanted to make sure that of it descended into tyranny it could be fought. Also, the Federal government did not have a standing army, so it wasn’t a completely unrealistic notion.
Overthrowing the monarchy is only step one, the rest of the steps need to be done right to lead to a free society. Look at what happened to France after their revolution. Reign of Terror, then Napoleon.
But I’ve heard people seriously make the argument that one of the reasons for an armed population now is in case we need to overthrow the government. How does this work, exactly? Most people would consider the overthrow of a democratically elected government by heavily armed thugs to be a bug, not a feature.

The thread is about the New England Patriots football team, whose namesake refers to the 18th-century civilians who organized into a Continental Army and managed to out-musket the army of King George III. I mean no comment on the modern-day situation by finding it amusingly ironic that that particular football team is substantially supporting the gun-control efforts. Simply a point of amusement.
