March Nemesis (Monthly Mini-Rants)

I’m sorry, I didn’t get the reference.

You must understand… My people, they have no bungholes.

No shit!

I lost my phone, probably stolen or pick-pocketed.

Now the rest of this is completely my fault.

I got a new phone, a low-end Android. Fine, suits my limited needs (on the stolen phone I was running a Linux server for no reason beyond terminal nerdery)

Anyway, to get to the mini-rant part. Google login is required at the App Store. But I forgot my overly complicated password. My old phone just logged me in automatically.

So naturally I created a second gmail.account, to try to get around that. But my phone is very sure of two things:

  1. I have a Google account
  2. Google is going to send me an sms to reset, but it will have timed out before I can use it. Or my recovery email address. More unecessary drama there…
  3. My laptop, which does have a password manager is dead, so I need to take it for repairs. Also, because of the of the Google account is so high to me, I think I told it to “not remember” my Google and banking logins.

Now my phone thinks I am scudsucker2, the second account. And it is actively blocking my attempts to get the password reset because my phone number is associated with both accounts.

And frustratingly not Gmail is sending an sms with the normal G-NNNMN format for unlocking accounts. I know my new phone is capable of recieving sms, because I am still gettimg spam.

Then things get more complex. My personal domain is linked to Gmail, so I can manage everything mail related from there, and - this is possibly the dumbest part - I set up my own domain to redirect all mail to Gmail, so I only need to monitor one account

So the inevitable happens. My recovery email goes straight into the Gmail account that I so cleverly locked my self out of.

Sigh. I work in IT. Perhaps I should have thought this through. If I was an intern, I’d fire myself.

Fuckit. Seems my account has neen hijacked, possibly via the lost phone.

My “recovery email” is now in a format completely different to my actual recovery email. Goddamn scammers.

We are now in what we call The Pollening here. Where everything - and I do mean everything - is coated in pollen. My nose itches. My face itches. I’m pretty sure my hair itches.

Supposedly it’s not the visible pollen that causes all the grief, but it gets all the blame anyway.

The pine pollen typically is not the allergen. My pediatrician said that I was allergic to oak pollen - specifically white oak pollen.

Yes, that’s what I meant by the visible pollen.

My bank has changed owners 4-5-6? times over the last 20 years. Over those 20 years, the routing number has remained the same and my old checks still worked. Until the latest takeover, and I get a bounced check and a $30 service charge.

I had an 80 mile drive on this bright, sunny morning; the trouble was my sunglasses were at home & my spare ones were in my car, which was also at home.

The other part of this post is that I got a new laptop (ordered online); it has a number pad (requirement) but is missing certain other keys, & instead of a right-side CTRL key it’s got a @#$%& {launch AI} key. I use that right-side CTRL key; I don’t give a flying ____ about a shortcut key to launch AI. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth: It’s one of those things one doesn’t think to look for until it’s too late. I would not have bought that one had I realized the keys that it is missing.

I bought a folding keyboard so I’m testing it out on this post, so far, so good much better!

That’s nauseating. It’s bad enough that half of the programs and apps I use today have a virtual button for it. I don’t need a physical one. Ugh.

I’m sure there’s an app to reconfigure the keyboard keys on the laptop. I suggest using the AI key to search for one.

It might be possible to remap it to CTRL.

…into outer space? I might use that.

As others have said, you can remap it. My work Lenovo came with the Ctrl and Fn keys reversed. Our IT company had me download PowerToys and used it to remap the keys.

I had planned to work remotely yesterday morning, but suddenly I’m being blocked from accessing my desktop on Citrix. Thinking it was because my work computer had been restarted or shut down over the weekend, I made sure to leave the computer on (but locked) and tried to remote in again just now. Nothing.

To add to the weirdness, on a whim I attempted to open File Explorer (remotely)…and it worked! I had full access to the network folder and the hard drive on my work computer. I just can’t use the remote desktop option. Grrrr.

I’ve got a Mac which is running dual boot Windows.

For the life of me, I cannot work out how to remap the keyboard to Windows when I boot Windows. It is not the standard QUERTY keyboard that is an issue, it is very common symbols, eg <, ÷, &, $

So anoying to write Windows code using half remembered character codes, or the built-in keyboard (Windows button, Cntr and O)

I am using Windows on a Mac, so I am an outlier.

Being told that I can get service through the website is also one of my pet peeves. Yes, I’ve been on the website; if I had been able to do my business there I wouldn’t be calling.

I’ve been trying to get a prescription refilled for the past week and a half. It’s partly my fault because I waited too long to request it. What I hadn’t remembered was that I had gotten the original prescription from the hospital pharmacy, which meant that getting it refilled meant having it transferred from the hospital pharmacy to CVS Caremark Mail Order. The cost for a 90day supply from Caremark is $125.00, as opposed to $195.00 from the hospital pharmacy. For some reason, however, Caremark and the hospital pharmacy makes a major production of doing the transfer. Trying to get my doctor to just send a new prescription to Caremark doesn’t seem to be an option. So I’m going to run out of the medicine before they can get the transfer and shipping done. Hopefully this won’t acerbate my liver condition too much.

Why the fuck does every goddamn thing you buy have a phone app which, if you don’t install it, you can’t operate/control anything? I bought a grow light system so I could plant some herbs in the house. It’s got a full spectrum light and a few other controls on it that are easy to use, but if you want to set a timer for the light, you have to install the fucking app on your phone! After trying to do so a couple of times, and fat-fingering the goddamn entry of our email both times, I gave up. Which brings me to another complaint: why the fuck do they need my email and why do I need a password? It’s a fucking grow light, not Fort Knox! It’s not like a scammer is going to say “Oh look, we can interfere with this guy’s light cycle! You’ll never see your basil again! Ah-hahahahahahahaaaaa!”

On the subject of keyboard remapping, I use a handy little utility called KeyTweak (Google it). It doesn’t need to stay in memory, as Windows already supports keyboard remapping via registry entries which are read at boot time. KeyTweak just makes setting up those registry entries very easy, with a visual guide.

Aside from the obvious (email = marketing), the apps are probably all based on a standard template and removing the password requirement is (from their viewpoint) more trouble than it’s worth.
