oh, NOW you are just passive aggressive? what happened to Mace A Dog nuts?
Florida Man, don’t you have enough people in Villages to do that for you? Awww…
Well, I’m sure your mom’s down here somewhere. Maybe I’ll look her up.
Your Mom eats your ass…? Even for Florida Man that’s low.
Keep you kinks to yourself.
Thanks for the laugh. Sorry it came at your expense. I also hate things that need apps. Like my Christmas lights. And the app is so bad. Come on.

As justified as it may feel, please avoid making personal threats of violence like this.
No warning issued.

And my screen shots, both on my PC and on an off-line drive ( or two ).
Evidence of prior threats?
Evidence of other posters threatening to be accomplices before the fact?
And the best thing about screen shots of Death Threats is… no Mod in the Verse can delete them.
If only I knew someone at the Prosecutors office to send these to if I ever needed to.
Bye…!

Per standing SDMB policy, any threats of legal action involving the SDMB are forwarded to Ed Zotti. Mundane Super Hero has been temporarily suspended until Ed has a chance to review the situation.
In the mean time, let’s drop the dog macing conversation, and (THIS IS A BIG ONE GUYS!) there will be no further discussion of the legal threats made in this thread.
Seriously, we’re talking immediate warning and discussion of posting privileges if you break this one.

this is so true - stop it with all the apps.
So our HR guy got fired this week because of something he posted on social media. Our CEO did not disclose what he said but she said there was no coming back from it.
I was disappointed because I liked the guy. He had kind of a snarky, loving teddy bear vibe.
Well I did some digging and I found out what shocking things he was willing to say on the record when he ran for local office as a Republican. Aggressively anti-woke, anti-liberal, appeals to “family values.” It was printed in the newspaper.
I know he didn’t get fired for his political beliefs. I am 99% sure it must have been something he posted on social media related to sexual assault or domestic violence victims.
But if this is what you’re willing to say in the papers… I can only imagine.
It’s crazy. You think you know someone. Everyone is pretty shocked at this turn of events. He really just seemed to belong here. He was too corporate and before he fucked up this job, he made me come back to the office for no reason at all after ten years of working remotely. I might try to renegotiate this one.
The “app” that bugs me the most is the Uber app, because my phone cannot run it and even if it could, I don’t subscribe to a data plan, though I would if the Uber thing worked. I’m sold on Uber after the ex-wife got one for me recently – it was much, much quicker to arrive than the estimate from the local taxi service, and just a fraction of their estimated fare. Looks like I’m gonna need a new phone with a data plan. I propose to pay for it by finally cancelling my landline which is getting outrageously expensive. I even have a gadget that lets my cell phone connect to it via Bluetooth and hooks into the house telephone wiring, supporting both incoming and outgoing calls from landline phones over the cell service.
On the bright anti-rant side of things, my CPP (Canada Pension Plan) and OAS (Old Age Security) deposits were due today, and I just checked my bank account to make sure they were there as I could use the money right now, and they were. I normally don’t bother checking so hadn’t realized how much inflation adjustment had increased the amounts since the last time I actually paid attention. Both are nearly $200 higher than my last recollection. Oh, Canada! ![]()
I had to replace my stove last year, and it wasn’t until it was installed and I was reading the manual that I saw that it wanted me to install an app on my phone. Fortunately the app was not required to operate it. But seriously, why would I want to be able to use an app to do anything in my kitchen?
Add me to the people who avoid buying stuff that requires an app. I don’t necessarily mind if it supports an app. But no, i don’t want to connect my washing machine to Wi-Fi.
For me it depends. I bought adjustable LED light strips (think Christmas tree lights) that can be changed from my phone. Color, pattern, and so on. That I like. I put them outside and it means I don’t have to go out to operate them.
A lot of other devices, though, I want the ability to control them from physical buttons. For example, anything that’s used to prep food or beverages, it’s less convenient to be going back and forth from the device and my phone. There is no benefit in an app. I think most appliances would be like that… I can imagine loading a washing machine or dishwasher and then having to pull out my phone to set the cycle and start it, when I’m already at the device.
I can see how it would be appealing for a manufacturer to design a device without a physical control panel, giving more aesthetic options, more flexibility in form factor, and not having to sacrifice structural integrity to accommodate those controls. And you can add features to an app you might not be able to add to a device directly (unless the device has a full digital interface and an internet connection to download updates).
But those advantages for a manufacturer are often not advantages for consumers. I’ve learned to check a product’s description carefully to see if an app is needed or available before buying it.

This is me, too. I am not a fan of apps for household appliances or many other things, either.
Not to mention that apps need continual updating as everyone’s phone software changes from release to release. We have all sorts of problems with our TV simply because it is so old that its various smart functions don’t always play well with our internet provider / router, not to mention that some of the apps themselves are no longer supported. The picture and sound are great, but we’re going to have to throw out the TV because the software is increasingly incompatible.
I imagine that your refrigerator’s app developers are not inclined to keep the app updated for the next 20 years.

I remember when stoves came out with a delayed timer; the marketing was that you could have it turn on in late afternoon & walk in to a fully cooked ___ when you came home from work. Nowhere in their marketing material did they state to do that you had to (obviously) put the ___ in the oven before you left for work in the morning, which means it was sitting out, unrefrigerated, for what, 7 hrs? Nope, no bacteria gonna form on that. ![]()
I’m assuming the phone app has the same (useless) capability.
I have a rule about apps, they are downloaded for my convenience, not anyone else’s; not a manufacturer, or a government (looking at you 4000 different parking apps, with a different one for a town I’m going to be in once!) or anyone else. If it doesn’t may my life better I’m not going to download it!
