Update- The water in my sinks is back on. I hear the sounds of a jackhammer outside. I am assuning that the water was turned off as part of some construction or repair job. Either, nobody told management about this or management never told us. I’m guessing it is the latter.
It being a Friday in Lent, I went to Captain D’s for lunch (I’m a weddings-and-funerals Catholic these days, but something about batter-fried fish calls from deep within me). One of the reasons to eat there is the cracklings, little bits of fried batter added to the plate before the fillets, around ~2-5 tsps.
There were none. I’ll try again next Friday, but if they are missing again I will have to abandon a cherished tradition.
I am currently sampling my first glass in a long time of Havana Club Reserva. It’s slightly darker than Bacardi Gold and tastes correspondingly richer, with almost a caramel-like undertone. I did not, however, get the puny little bottle in the illustration above – I got the large 1.14 liter, and since they didn’t have very many of those left, I got three. The description reads as follows:
Havana Club Cuban rum is a medium bronze-amber colour with complex aromas of cocoa, tobacco leaf, toasted nut and oak. It is dry, light to medium bodied, elegant on the palate, with flavours of caramel, pecan, sweet spice and mineral with peppery, smoky notes on the finish.
Certainly glad that I’m not a scotch drinker – the empty shelves in the scotch section were by far the biggest stretch of emptiness in the store. I thought most of the stuff came from Scotland, but apparently quite a lot of is tainted as American.
The water has been turned on and off several times. Neither management nor maintenance ever contacted me. I’m assuming the water to the whole building was effected. Without tap water, I needed potable fluids. I went to a mini mart and bought a bunch of bottled water. On the way back, I walked around to the back of the building. There was a large truck, some form of construction vehicle, workers and a very a large and very deep hole in the street. I waited a while, hoping somebody would notice me and approach so that I could ask whether the water would be shut off and when. After a bit, I slowly approached the hole. The man operating the construction vehicle yelled that I could not cross here and needed to go around. I yelled back that I did not want to cross. I wanted to know about the water shut off. Still nobody approached. He yelled back that the water was not shut off.
When I got back to kitchen sink, the water was back on. I have no idea if it will be shut off again, when or for how long. If any attempt of any kind was made to inform people of the water shut off before it happened, I missed it.
I would really like to shower tonight. I have no idea if the water will suddenly be shut off again, when, or for how long.
I may have already posted that my tv reception has been terrible this week. I wanted to watch Dracula’s Kung Fu Theater on Retro at ten tonight. Before scanning for channels again, I noticed that my antenna seemed to have been jostled out of place. I fixed it. That seems to have fixed my reception problem.
Then I checked the guide to see what channels I now got. Retro is showing an episode of The Saint instead of Dracula’s Kung Fu Theater. This sucks.
I pit Black Caviar. I won a bet and I’m being paid with a few jars of the stuff. Yeah, I know… the bet was for cash but his wife watches his money like a hawk. It’s this or he skates ( which I think he wants to do, so caviar it is ).
I heard it was good with sour cream and crackers, but I won’t lie… it is very fishy. It’s not as bad as anchovies… but there have to be better ways to serve it. The internet says you can serve it on cheese, but what kind? Mozz with a slice of tomato? Cheddar? I know that sweet cheeses are right out… and that soft cheeses like cheese dips are out too.
What about veggies? a slice if raw onion would be very strong, but so would the caviar. What about slices of pepper? I’m pretty sure that I’d regret serving it on an 1/8th of a habanero but it would cover the fishy taste. What about some light cream cheese?
The internet said that it could be served with potato… so if I slice a potato into rounds and air fry them… might that work? Also air frying onions slices can cut down their bitterness. Could it be served on squares of cold cuts and swiss?
Note to self: when betting, make sure it’s cash and make sure a third person holds the money.
Hey, I like anchovies, though mostly just on pizza! And only occasionally.
I’m not a caviar eater but if it was me, I’d try it on triangles of buttered toast. Your idea of cream cheese might work, too, in which case I’d try a toasted bagel buttered and spread with Boursin cheese and then sprinkled with some of the caviar.
Maintenance finally knocked on my door earlier this afternoon. I told them that my water appeared to be shut off due to road work and was now back on. Both management and maintenance should have known that and informed me.
I mentioned buying things to drink at a local mini mart. I used up the skim milk (which I can only buy at Target) this morning. The quart of one percent milk I bought at the mini mart last night had an expiration date of March 11. I opened it to find it was so expired as to be nearly solid. Disgusted, I made the mistake of throwing out rather than taking it back for a refund.
First, the problem is definitely not my fridge. A cup of water with Mio I had placed in the fridge before taking a nap was very cold when I woke up.
A new rant
Joann is going out of business. When I lived in my first apartment, there was a Joann a short bus ride away. It was conveniently near Roosevelt mall- which had a Kay Bee toys, a Radio Shack, Allied Hobby, and an independent used book store.
I was rather dismayed to find on one visit that location was closing. It was replaced by a Pep boys. That was just kicking me when I was down.
My Gobhi and I went to a Joann tonight. We didn’t have as much time as we would have liked. I didn’t find anything, She bought about sixty dollars worth of fabric. While I am very excited to help her learn to use her sewing machine, and to see her in the outfits she makes, I am very sad that Joann is closing.
@DocCathode, even if the problem isn’t your fridge, you might find it useful for peace of mind to keep a thermometer in there. I have one in mine, and it was useful for adjusting the fridge temperature to optimum cold while staying above freezing. You may have noticed that store coolers and freezers all have thermometers in them (at least they do around here). So when an almost-new carton of cream was spoiled nearly a month before its expiry date, I knew the problem was definitely not my fridge.
Sometimes the problem is due to the store’s cooler, but more often it’s due to careless handling, like leaving frozen or refrigerated items out at room temperature for too long.
I have been trying to find a place to buy cheap therrmometers. I need a few old fashioned glass thermometers mounted on easy to read plastic cases to hang on the wall in various places in my apartment. Heat is three seperate radiators. They cannot be set to a temperature. The only control is a dial that can be set to Off, Lo, Med, and Hi.
My Mom saw a post I made on Facebook about this. She sent me a single digital thermometer. I put it on the wall in my living room, as that is where I spend most of my time.
I did have a thermometer that was perfect. I got rid of it when I moved into my second apartment. I bought that thermometer at a Dollar Tree. There are no dollar stores of any kind within a few miles of my current apartment.
