Naw, it’s fun. There’s plenty of opportunities for a good oneliner, it can hone arguments, provide edjamacation to the peanut gallery, spark interesting side conversations and most importantly distracts the troll from doing other annoying stuff.
Besides which, I think automatically labeling anyone with a certain type of opinion and a certain amount of arrogance a “troll.” There are WAY too many people out there who genuinely believe stuff like that — just look at the ongoing Republicans thread in this forum. And the OP’s kind of belief… Well, people have died because of that kind of paranoia and outlook.
Not saying that this means it’s worthwhile to engage them, of course — just that being wacky and arrogant != troll.

Recreational outrage threads, where you get to deride somebody, are okay. But there’s no feedback - the people we’re mocking don’t know we’re mocking them. Poking a troll with a stick is more fun because you can hear the troll squealing.
It’s the internet equivalent of a bullfight. Some proud beast emerges, confident that he is the strongest thing in creation and is unbeatable. A crowd gathers and challengers enter the arena. The bull attacks, sure that he will crush these pathetic challengers. But the challengers dodge away and leave the bull wounded. The bull’s confused and maybe a little warier but he charges again. And again, he’s wounded and his opponents are unharmed. Again and again the bull attacks, never realizing that his situation was always hopeless. The crowd has him outnumbered and the bull never understood the danger. In the end, we always get our blood.
