Mark Robinson just won the GOP primary to become the candidates for governor of North Carolina.
Rachel Maddow had a piece on last night’s MSNBC show pointing out his questionable beliefs, declarations, and platform. It’s also in the link at the bottom of this entry.
But the reason I put this here, rather than in the Politics heading, is because of something he said:
OK, American Idol and Dancing with the Stars I can almost see.
But Chopped???
I don’t see how “Open the basket in front of you and make a gourmet meal from the tripe, asparagus, and peanut M&Ms inside” is promoting a New World Order. Except maybe in the kitchen.
Don’t waste your time trying to make sense of something that doesn’t make sense. The GOP feeds it’s devoted followers with garbage like this because they think it will rile them up. It doesn’t matter what it is, just keep the base angry, paranoid, and riled up!
You’ve clearly seen the show. It’s always “this dish celebrates both my Nanonesian and Madeupistan heritages” and “I came here as a poor Elbonian immigrant and this dish is inspired by my currently dying Ma’s pickled trotters”. Strange spices and exotic ingredients with furrin names. They never just make grits and BBQ. Certainly never a hotdish. And the tiny portions!
It’s a great in-your-face slap to Real Merkin Values ™. Chopped? More like Woked!
We’re clearly watching different versions of the show. The ones I’ve seen more often have the contestants struggling with how to incorporate Gummy Worms or Pop Rocks into their supposed-to-be-high-class dish rather than making a statement about their ethnic background.
Not necessarily their own ethnic background, although that was both examples I gave.
There’s also a lot of “Oh, I know all about salt-cured toenail clippings because I lived in East Westernstein for 6 months” but also “Not sure how they usually cook canned hamster butthole, but I’m going to blend it with these chipotles and stick it in the ice-cream maker if it kills me”. Sure, there’s the weird sweets, but there’s also a lot of foreign ingredients thrown in to the mix.
But it’s also about what kind of dishes people make. Nobody’s making exotic-ingredient pizza or mac&cheese.
Well, heck, nobody would on a show like that. They’re trying to impress with gourmet aspirations. The closest they’ll come to Mac and Cheese or Pizza is some inside-out confection that they’ll say “recalls comfort food”.
As a NC resident I can easily see this guy becoming governor. Which is frightening considering this from the AP:
N.C. GOVERNOR’S RACE COULD ECHO BIDEN V. TRUMP
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson easily won the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary. His incendiary rhetoric — he’s called Hillary Clinton a “heifer” and Michelle Obama a man — ensures a hotly contested general election in the crucial swing state that could spill over into the presidential race.
Robinson had no prior experience in public office before his 2020 election — and it shows.
He blasted the action hero movie “Black Panther” in 2018 as a “satanic Marxist production” made by a “secular Jew,” using a Yiddish slur for black people. He faced calls to resign in 2021 after likening gay and transgender people to “filth.”
His brash style earned plaudits from Trump, who on Sunday called Robinson “better than Martin Luther King” while offering his “complete and total endorsement.”
But it is also likely to motivate Democrats in the state to turn out in November to support state Attorney General Josh Stein — while raising oodles of advertising dollars to use Robinson’s own words against him.
He’s also a Holocaust denier, and recently said he would like to go back to before women could vote (albeit because he thought the Republican Party was more “energized” back then). Not sure he’'s really thought through how he’d be treated in pre-1920 America.
I’m hoping that his sheer awfulness will work against him, but given everything else this cannot be taken for granted.
