Hmmm… perhaps I should rethink my post.
I grew up in the shadow of Gotham.
I assume that strangers probably want to mug me.
I think there are a couple of things going on. Der will on occasion lambast Christians for their treatment of women. And his attacks on certain feminist outlooks are generally more substantive than his attacks on other groups.
Here’s a test. When you see an objectionable post, ask yourself “How could the poster have expressed that while staying within the bounds of the rules?” If the answer is straightforward, then the poster may be modded. If the poster intention was pure insult, then they belonged in the pit. But racist arguments are permitted here following principles of academic freedom. So are frankly paranoid arguments by those who fear false accusations of rape. It would be hard to mod these last 2 without putting a lid on substantive argument.
From my admittedly selfish perspective, I don’t mind see the occasional one trick bigot receive the Straight Dope smackdown. [1] But Der is really in a separate category.
[1] … and I readily concede that I probably wouldn’t feel so lackadaisical if I had to shoulder the abuse and insult minorities routinely receive in the US, IHMO. Along those lines, I find much of your commentary worth reading.
I can see where you’re coming from but to claim, as he has claimed, that most American women think all men are monsters and potential rapists goes well, well beyond criticizing “certain feminist outlooks”.
Let me note, that I don’t mean to suggest that your or any of Der’s defenders agree with him on those attitudes or even think they’re morally acceptable.
I respectfully disagree but I can certainly understand why the mods take the position they do and it’s there job to uphold the board rules not just the board rules they agree with.
Don’t worry, that’s true, to differing degrees of everyone. It’s what makes us human.
Thank you very much.
For me, it’s because his views on women aren’t as one-sided as you seem to think. Yes, he has a little bit of a paranoid MRA thing going when it comes to sex (and divorce, IIRC) BUT he’s also pro-choice partly from a women’s rights stance, he’s against sexism, etc, etc. I’d characterise him as a anti-sexist by inclination/ideology who has unfortunately bought in to the MRA feminazi bullshit in some aspects. Which is sad, really. The “tape all sexual encounters” thing is particularly so. Guy has trust issues.
I’ve justified what I did at much more length than it required, considering. And again I point to WillFarnaby/Qin Shi Huangdi’s posts in that thread. **Qin Shi ** examples from that thread. Plenty of posters said things I don’t personally agree with; only you felt the need to post a bunch of stuff like “boo hiss” and attack people’s legal or teaching credentials.
One post containing the phrase “boo hiss” a couple of times does not constitute “a bunch of stuff”, and I did not attack anyone’s credentials. I asked one poster if he remembered something that is commonly covered in a 1L con law class. Maybe he doesn’t, particularly if he doesn’t practice in that area. I asked another poster if he taught civics. That does not constitute an attack on his credentials.
Your innocent face isn’t working.
“Sir, when I inquired as to whether you had shit for brains, it was out of a mixture of legitimate curiosity and honest concern for your health.”
Fuck’s sake, just give it up. Making a thread personal and implying that someone’s bad at their job/a fraud is over the line outside of the Pit. Just suck it up and move on.
We’ve been over this a couple of times already.
The actual quote:
Full post:
Perhaps you could recognize that to a third party (meaning me and at least some of the people who’ve posted in this thread) that these comments didn’t sound the way you think they did.
How do you reconcile your post here with Lightnin’s excellent summary of your posts in that thread as mentioned earlier:
Your posts in that thread were useless and you ought to be ashamed of them instead of complaining about how you got called on making a bunch of useless posts.
Not to hijack, but I think that a simple mod note against telling a poster “Boo Hiss” at his proposal may be a good one if it wasn’t so easily circumvented by just insulting a group he belongs to with much stronger vitrol.
For example, I say “Boo Hiss” not to your proposal, or any Doper’s proposal, but to a group I call “People Who Disagree with JTGAIN” whose members are a bunch of assholes.
Oak, when you’re in a hole, stop digging.
And I say that as someone who initially thought moderating “boo hiss” was a bit silly because I assumed anyone using the phrase would be using it as a joke.
Let me try another analogy. Say the speed limit is 70 MPH. I’m driving along at 65 MPH. Checking my rearview mirror, I see flashing lights, so I pull over. You get out of the squad car, and announce that even though I was not speeding, you think I might speed at some unknown point in the future. And while you’re at it, you observe that my inspection sticker will expire in six months, and you think my turn signal might malfunction sometime. And if I do speed, or drive with an expired inspection sticker, or drive with a burned out turn signal, you will issue me a ticket. And you repeat that behavior every day for weeks or months. You’ve told me nothing I do not already know, accomplished no legitimate law enforcement purpose, and pissed me off in the process.
Perhaps you should recognize that those moderator actions don’t sound the way you think they do.
Good grief.
The police comparison doesn’t mean very much since moderators don’t do the same thing police do. The police do a job that’s pretty strictly bound by laws and the Constitution; we enforce the board rules but also do a more general job of trying to keep discussions going. However this does raise a relevant question: why does even a minor mod note piss you off so grievously? It’s not worth a hundredth of the outrage.

Wah wah-wah wah wah wah.

Threads like this actually make me very sympathetic to the mods.
Oak, seriously, just drop it. Whether you’re in the right or not you’ve past the point at which you’re going to be able to convince others of your point.
Beyond that, next time I’d recommend using a PM if you have an issue with a ruling he made regarding you. That’s what I’ve done.
One of these days you might have a legitimate beef against a moderator, and nobody is going to listen to you because of too many complaints like this.
First mod notes are being thrown around like frisbee golf and now the mods are “wah-wah wahing” posters. This place has changed man. I miss the good ol’ days of pixie sticks and hopscotch
