Marquette (and Gladstone), Michigan restaurants

(Paging Athena)
I’m doing Tour da U.P (https://www.teachingfamilyhomes.com/tourdaup.htm) for the 4th year.

It is a different route evey year. Usually it is:
Start - day of biking - overnight site A - day of biking - overnight site B - day off and overnight in B - day of biking - overnight site C - bike back to start

This year it is:
Start - day of biking - overnight site A - day of biking in a loop - overnight and day off and overnight in A - day of biking - overnight site B - bike to start.
(start being Gladstone, A being Marquette Tourist park, and B being Superior Central School)

Most meals are included in the trip, except for lunch and supper on the day off.
Subs or whatever are probably ok for lunch but am looking a for a good place to eat supper. Nothing too fancy (I won’t have dressy clothes) but a step up from Perkins.

I’m also looking for supper the day before the tour in Gladstone. (I’m thinking of Delona or Four-J’s)

Any ideas appreciated - thanks

Brian

Subs? In da UP?

Eat pasties!!

Oh fun! I was thinking about doing Tour Da UP this year, but they spend too much time around places I already bike.

I don’t have any suggestions for Gladstone, I just don’t know that area very well.

Good restaurants:

Since you mention Subs - the local Sub Shop is Togo’s, it’s been here forever, it’s not part of the Togo’s chain. Try the #16, very yummy.

Also good and UPish is Jean Kay’s Pasties. Good lunch when you’ve been biking a lot.

Union Grill is a BBQ/Burger kind of place that’s south of town. It’s pretty far from Tourist Park, but I wanted to mention it because it’s really, really good. They have seating, but it’s the kind of place where you order at the check-out and then sit down & they call your number when your food is ready.

Sit-down places:

The Vierling is my favorite for basic grub. The food is not fancy, but what they do is homemade & good. Burgers/Whitefish/etc. It’s also a brewpub, if you’re into such things. Try the blueberry wheat, it’s not sweet like most fruit beers, and it’s served with fresh blueberries in it.

There’s a new Irish pub right on Washington St. that I’ve heard amazing things about. I haven’t been there yet, though. Called the Far Rover or something like that. No liquor license yet, so if that’s important to you, call ahead and see if they have it.

More upscale is L’Attitude, a wine bar that has really nice outdoor seating overlooking the lower harbor. Probably the most interesting food in town - eclectic small plates that include flatbread pizzas, sushi, some steaks, some seafood, hummus, etc etc. A bit more upscale than the other places, but you won’t feel out of place in shorts & a t-shirt.

There’s a new middle eastern place over by the co-op that I can’t remember the name of, but is really, really good if you’re into that kind of food. We also have two Thai places now - one on Third St. that’s more casual, and a new one on Front St. a block up from downtown that’s more upscale and very, very good. Once again, it’s not so upscale that you can’t wear shorts & a T-Shirt.

In fact, noplace in town is fancy enough that you can’t go there in shorts & T. This is da UP, we don’t like dressing up.

Let me know if you want more details on any of this, or anything else about Marquette. Or the names of the places I can’t remember - I’ll look 'em up if you’re interested. We’ve actually got quite a few good places now - not the restaurant wasteland that it was several years ago.

My go-to in Marquette is the Portside Inn. Your basic bar and restaurant, but pretty consistently good food and beer selection. Definitely try the bread sticks with pub cheese on the side.

The last meal of the trip is Pastys.

It turns out that the kayak trip I plan to go on is from 10am - 4pm and so I won’t be eating at a restaurant for that. Thanks for the supper recomendations - I didn’t really expect Gladstone info, but I figured it wouldn’t hut to ask.

I believe this year is actually a brand new route. The 2005 and 2006 routes (Keeweenau and Porkupine Mt) were more or less repeats, and last year was a new one (Menominee to Iron Mountain)

addendum:
Obviously just because the route is new to TdUP doesn’t mean it is new to Athena

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Greetings from the NMU library. I’ve been invited to tag along with some other bikers to go to Coco’s (very near the bike trail) - I’ll let you know what I think.

p.s. Went kayaking from near the Presque Ilse Marina to picnic rocks and back . Pretty strong winds but eventually go my “lake legs”

Missed this thread the first time around. My favorite dinner restaurant in Marquette is The Villa Capri. Hope you’re having a great ride.

Coco’s is pretty good for breakfasts. I’ll be interested to hear what you think about their dinners.

I was at the Vierling tonight - lots of Tour da UP people there. I was wondering if one of them was you but I guess not!

I have eaten at The Vierling. Decent beer, really good Lake Whitefish. <sigh>

Man, I’ve got to get back to da UP. I’ve been most places up there: Porkies, Ironwood, Iron River, Iron Mountain, Copper Harbor, Gay, Munising, Escanaba (in da moonlight, even), Newberry, Whitefish point, Paradise, Manistique, St. Ignace, and the Soo.

But I’ve never been to Marquette. :frowning:

And now I’m hungry for whitefish and pasties…

UP Dopefest? (DopeUP?)

Smallest…Dopefest…ever.

Hell I’d go back to MI for that.

We have UP Dopefests all the time. They just involve Mr. Athena and I.

Dinner was good - I had the tenderloin with cognac peppercorn sauce plus some pasta from my dining companions (8 older women).
