Married / You're the Worst

Anyone else watching FX’s Thursday night comedy block?

I’ve been enjoying both shows since they started, neither particularly great but pretty good. This week, however, was a quantum leap forward. By the end of the hour I was thinking that both of these shows are brilliant.

On Married, the bit with the phone sex was obvious and hammy, but still had me in stitches. It probably helps that I’ve had a crush on Judy Greer for years. As for the show in general, I love the way they gradually introduced Paul Reiser.

I’ve liked You’re the Worst a little more than Married so far, and this week’s was a perfect microcosm of the show. As the two main characters slowly fall for each other, they destroy the lives of everyone they touch not out of malice but more indifference for how destructive they are. But that cuddle at the end was just so sweet.

I thought I had posted about Married. Can’t find it.

Watched the first two episodes. Awful, awful show. Neither show had the best bits from the promos that suckered me into watching it.

Have two episodes of the other one on my DVR. Will probably get deleted before they are watched.

I’ve got Married on my DVR, all of them, and need to find the time to watch. I’ll try to remember to come back then with a reaction, one way or the other.

… but You’re the Worst is my favorite new show this summer (kind of faint praise given the new shows this summer, but still). It’s still feeling itself out - developing the main “relationship”, seeing what it can do with the supporting characters - but it’s already really funny, occasionally touching, and always enjoyable. Anyone who’s into the other occasionally messed up or oddball half-hour comedies should give it a couple of episodes.

I would say if you don’t like Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you won’t like either of these shows. Both feature unlikeable leading characters.
