Mars and Saturn are making a great pair at the moment

It’s a lovely clear night here and I’ve been out in the garden admiring the pairing of Mars and Saturn in the northwestern sky.

The view should be even better on Sunday and Monday nights as the waxing crescent moon joins them.

As expected, the grouping of the moon, Mars and Saturn looked very impressive this evening - until the cloud rolled in and obscured the view.

Right on schedule …I missed so many cool celestial events due to crappy weather

Thanks for the heads-up, I’ll be sure to take a look. The sun is setting in the next 30 minutes. I can already see the moon high in the south.

Crud, too cloudy tonight.
Will Mars and Saturn still be pretty close together tomorrow night? (And will the moon still be unfull enough to keep things dark enough to enjoy them)?

This shows the relative positions of Mars, Saturn and the moon as they were in Sydney on Sunday night. By last night (Monday) the moon had moved above and to the right of the two planets, although it was still quite close to them. It will be further away from the two planets by now.

Mars and Saturn will stay fairly close to each other for at least the next few days. As Cunctator says, the moon will move farther away each night.

It’s getting darker but still no planets or stars visible. It’s a clear night so I expect to see Mars and Saturn soon.

The moon has moved a bit, it’s now just moving into Scorpius. I believe it would have moved up in the illustration in your link, Cunctator, and be above the “s” in Mars, almost out of the picture.

The view in the US looks more like this but the moon has moved to the left. Barely visible in the illustration (easier to see if you click the full size version) is Scorpius, with Antares near the left edge. The moon is very near the uppermost of the three stars lined up almost vertically.

Thanks, both of you. Weatherman says tomorrow night should be pretty clear.

Thanks to Cunctator for starting this thread. I would have missed it otherwise. It’s a beautiful clear warm (but cooling down) evening here in New Mexico. Perfect for stargazing. I can see Sagittarius now, from my tiny backyard here in town (on the edge of Albuquerque). I believe I will open a beer, go sit in my tiny backyard and look at the night sky.
