Martin/Zimmerman: humble opinions and speculation thread

Oh okay, thanks for the info.

I’m glad they investigated that thoroughly.

Are you under the impression that firearm offenses are the only crimes in Canada? What if your friends or family committed some other felony? Limiting yourself to firearms offenses sounds a lot like weasel wording.

Apparently Corey has a habit of threatening lawsuits against her critics.

Wow. Wonder if she ever heard of Mike Nifong. They should do lunch.

There is an extensive discussion on this over at:

It has many interesting responses. Some of them are rather technical and more down Bricker’s line. The consensus seems to be that she actually didn’t violate Florida law, but she did seem to be in violation of some bar association rules.

One post linked to her response to a column about her threatening a columnist for libel.

He also mentioned other cases of similar behavior. I think the term, ‘thin skinned’ fits, but ‘hissy fit’ seems inappropriate for accusations of professional misconduct.

a 40 minute phone call seems to fall into the rant category which pushes her past “thin skinned”. It doesn’t seem like it’s something a prudent attorney would do.

Of course, if Corey was Zimmerman’s defense attorney, then everything she’s ever done would be perfectly understandable and she’d be ethically pure as the driven snow.

Which isn’t to say she’s right. In fact, she is a little scary. My first thought upon seeing her talk to the press was, oh my god, it’s Dolores Umbridge.

Wow, I was trying to think of who she reminded me of.

Actually there’s some truth to what you’ve said. I think there’s more acceptance of a defense attorney pushing the line of defense than there is with the state doing everything possible to convict. IMO the state should do everything possible to seek justice for all concerned.

Her press conference where she describes Trayvon’s parents as “sweet” just struck me as really odd along with her smiling. What exactly are you smiling about? You announce your findings, take questions and go away.

I have mixed feelings about Corey and I’m starting to question the wisdom behind appointing her as special prosecutor. When she spoke about the actual legal process, she was spot on. On the other hand, she should have ignored Dershowitz. Taking offense publicly and being overly sensitive to criticism makes it easy to call her judgement into question. That is just minor kerfuffle compared to her decision to charge a 12 year-old as an adult for first degree murder. I admit to not knowing much about that case, but it sounds insane on the surface. Why does Florida distinguish adults from juveniles if that is even possible?

Is there a term that falls between ‘thin skinned’ and ‘psychotic’?

This may be the first time on this topic, but I agree with you on that, particularly the smiling bit. She wasn’t just casually and politely smiling occasionally, which I could have overlooked, she was persistently smiling as if she was speaking at some sort of celebration.

She sure does seem to enjoy the national spotlight, that one.

Career driven? future reality show contestant?

That’s why I thought the Dolores Umbridge comparison seemed to be on the mark.

I had to look that up to find out it was a character from Harry Potter. I guess she smiled a lot?

Dolores Umbridge held three different positions at Hogwarts where “she had enormous power over the students, teachers, and the curriculum, which she wielded despotically.” Given that “[h]er time at Hogwarts was characterised by cruelty and abusive punishments against students, and because of her interfering and condescending ways she was generally hated by most students and teachers alike”, her insincere smile chilled the blood of anyone who knew the depths of her sadistic depravity.

Getting back to the evidence, apparently Trayvon recieved a phone call at the 7-11, which he seemingly answered, but it wasn’t shown on the alleged to be his phone bill. He also allegedly made two almost simultaneous phone calls, 6:45-6:50, and 6:46-6:48, according to the phone records.

sounds like a disconnected call and he tried to call back a couple of times. Not sure that gets recorded by the phone company. Who he tried to dial should be recorded on his phone though. I suspect it’s his girlfriend since that is who he was talking to on the way home.

Sounds Pretty Harsh. I expect Zimmerman will either see big increase in bond or be denied bond.

Here is a link to the actual order.

I have seen the footage. There’s nothing of either one of the guys on any of the cameras.

Assassinating your superior to rise in the ranks would be considered a smart, ambitious plan.
