Marvel's The Gifted

No, they couldn’t. He’s tied up in the New Mutants movie, played by Henry Zaga.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense, seems to just be a plot device to allow mutants to be controlled without killing them.

They don’t appear to be limiting themselves to only one X-continuity. The movies’ continuity is a mess, but the First Class series may or may not be in continuity with Deadpool (and possibly forthcoming X-Force). Legion is off in its own continuity, despite Professor X apparently being a thing there. The Gifted will apparently reference Magneto, but no indication if it fits into the movie continuity. And Logan is an open question – is it the endgame of the First Class series? of The Gifted series? or of the original X-Men movie trilogy? or none of the above?

The Gifted is reusing Blink and Warpath/Thunderbird who were in Days of Future Past not too long ago. The Colossus in DoFP isn’t the Colossus in Deadpool. Teenage Negasonic Warhead in Deadpool has most of Cannonball’s powerset. And Sunspot in DoFP doesn’t seem to be the same Sunspot coming up in New Mutants.

There’s no dispute about character rights, as with other characters between Fox and Marvel/Disney; they could have used Sunspot in The Gifted if they wanted to. But it would have made no sense – this isn’t a New Mutants story, and the duplication of power sets would not have added to the show.

I’m not sure what to say about the assumption that the superstrong rich kid from Brazil could be the same character as the impoverished street kid from Columbia who shoots light beams. Is this some kind of “well, they all look alike” thing?

It has nothing to do with who has the rights, it has to do with separation of properties.

It’s the same reason the Bat characters save for Batman himself were used sparingly in Justice League and JLU. It’s the same reason that the only MCU movie character who’s appeared in any of the TV series is a brief appearance by Fury in Agents of SHIELD, and their sparing with the references to them.

Blink and Warpath/Thunderbird are both in DoFP and The Gifted. Colossus is in both DoFP and Deadpool. Caliban is in both Age of Apocalypse and Logan. There are three or four separate continuities in that list. They’re not separating the properties. In fact, they specifically discuss shared characters between the “streams”.

Days of Future Past came out 3 years ago.

The New Mutants movie is coming out at the tail end of this season.

It’s kind of impossible to conflict with a movie that isn’t actually in theatres.

Also, since you’re claiming they’re obviously different characters:

Eclipse was the alias used by Roberto in Age of X, while involved with a similar group to the one he’s with here. And Sunspot was in DoFP with Blink and Thunderbird - with powers beyond strength, FTR - so it would make sense for him to be playing Eclipse’s role here…if not for the fact that he’s already tied up in the movie.

And if not for the fact that they’ve specifically marketed Eclipse as a new character created up for the series.

But apparently there can only be one Latin American mutant character, so they’re obviously the same character.

Let’s see, what’s more likely?

That, in order to not screw up their own marketing, Fox disallowed the use of Sunspot, and, since the writers had intended to use a Latino character, they created a new Latino, gave him an overlapping powerset, and one of Sunspot’s other aliases.

Or that they’re totally allowed to use Sunspot, despite him being a major character in a movie coming out early next year, but didn’t want to, and the fact that the Original Character Do Not Steal they created was a Latino with some of Sunspots powers and one of his other codenames is totally, totally a coincidence, and it’s only the racism of everyone but you which makes anyone think otherwise.

Sif, one of Thor’s Asgardian cohorts in the movies (played by Jaimie Alexander), actually has significant screen time in two episodes of Agents of Shield.

And there’s Peggy Carter, who was in a couple of the Captain America movies, has a couple of cameos in AoS episodes, and had her own TV series.

Anyone still watching this? I’m enjoying it quite a bit, although as I said I’m an easy mark for superhero stuff and X-Men stuff in particular. The latest episode addressed the connection between the Strucker twins and their comic-book counterpart, Fenris. And it wasn’t at all what I expected.

Turns out Lauren and Andy aren’t intended to be a very loose adaptation of Andrea and Andreas, after all… Instead, their world actually did include twins named Andrea and Andreas von Strucker who were supervillains calling themselves Fenris – but this was many decades ago. Andreas is the Strucker children’s great-grandfather.

At the same time it was revealed that Reed Strucker was also a mutant, but his father prevented him from manifesting powers with an experimental treatment to keep Reed from ending up like his grandfather, Andreas. Reed’s father was a mutant as well, but kept his power hidden.I didn’t see any of that coming, and am pretty curious now where they’re going with this. They made a point of emphasizing that the Strucker kids are unusual, even for mutants.

I think the show is now settling into a pretty good groove. Introducing the characters took a bit but it is now working. Though I don’t like the drug cartel/ex-girl friend thread at all. I hope that ends soon.

re: tim314

Yeah, I thought that was an interesting development. Not totally surprising, since both kids were mutants I had a feeling we would learn that one or both of the parents had some latent mutant powers or something.

Based on the grandfather’s warnings

it sure looks like they’re setting up the brother and sister to be a repeat of their ‘Fenris’ ancestors, at least in terms of their powers. Note the ominous shot of them holding hands at the end of the episode,…

Didn’t Maria Hill also cameo on AoS?

Yep, also Dum Dum Dugan and Howard Stark had appearances in AoS and/or Agent Carter.
