How depressing. I don’t see her replacement to carry on.
I also grew up listening to PP&M. I think they were the earliest musical influence on my life that I can remember. I knew all their songs by heart. I thought Mary had a beautiful soulful voice. May she rest in peace.
I felt the inspiration to drop about $15 on PP&M songs on iTunes in honor of her. Live on in my iPod, Mary.

Yeah, I might have to do that myself. I’ve just been watching/listening to a performance of If I Had A Hammer from 1963 on Youtube. In my memory they were good, but I’d forgotten how good they really were (and how much hotter she was than I remembered ;)). Here’s a link.
iTunes has an incredible collection of PP&M that consists of four different collected albums (IOW, compilations) ranging from the ones everyone knows to the ones only people who follow them on tour know, but the whole thing costs about $75, which I can’t justify at the moment, so I went for individual songs.
Listening to some of those old recordings, it’s amazing how well they have traveled in time. Hootenannies may not be the latest rage, but the songs are as good as ever and PP&M’s performance was, and still is, excellent.
And while that video technology leaves something to be desired by today’s standards, audio technology had developed sufficiently that it could capture a performance with very little loss or sacrifice. We could hardly do much better today.
For those of you who still have a dusty copy of the National Lampoon High School Yearbook Parody in your basement somewhere, dig it out and turn to page 72 for a surprise appearance by Mary Travers.
Turns out she was married to one of the Lampoon publishers at the time.
That explains it! I remember that celebrity cameo well, in one of my favorite parodies. I just thought it was a fan’s photo.
Tell me, did they ever catch the Mad Crapper? ![]()
That’s a shame. I really liked them as a kid. (My dad’s influence there) Farewell Mary.
If it’s any reassurance, as popular culture continues to grow in importance, there will be more noted pop stars dying. ![]()
I’ve never been a big fan of folk music, but Peter, Paul and Mary were always a class act.
RIP, Ms. Travers, you will be missed.
