Maryam Mirzakhani was Iranian.
In 1994 she won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad and was the first Iranian to win.
In 1995 she got a perfect score at the International Mathematical Olympiad and won 2 gold medals.
In 1999 she earned her BSc in Math from the Sharif University in Tehran. She then went to Harvard and earned her PhD in 2004.
In 2004 she became a professor at Princeton.
In 2008 she moved to Stanford as a professor.
In 2013 she was diagnosed with cancer.
In 2014 she won the Fields Medal, considered the highest honor in mathematics.
She died on July 14th, 2017. She was 40. Way too soon.
I knew of her from her Fields medal. Her work is far above my head but I read about her life when she won the medal and was moved quite deeply by her story.
