Thank you very much, Antonius Block. Gosh that sounds formal.
Only Mostly Dead and I live in MD too, and are definitely not southerners.
oh, and Go Terps! (both of us are recent grads)
Not sure that I understand what this file is and why it’s being compiled, however …
I was born in Delaware; I’ve now lived in MD for 27 years (and between my birth and the move into MD, I lived in MI, PA and NJ). Both states are below the Mason-Dixon line, which would -technically- place them as Southern, but I think the more accurate term is Mid-Atlantic. Granted there are parts of both states (lower Delaware, eastern shore MD, southern MD) that have a distinct Southern leaning, but all over I wouldn’t consider Maryland or Delaware as being “Southern.” Just my take on things. I consider myself to be Mid-Atlantican, I guess.
Having grown up in Maryland, I can say that as a kid in mid-Maryland I did not think of myself as a Southerner, but as an ex-Marylander, I felt a lot more like a Southerner than like a Yankee. Also, according to anyone not from the South, I have a southern accent. FWIW, I think of myself as a person from the mid-Atlantic states.
The people I’ve taken off the Southern Dopers summary file, thus far, have stated they don’t consider themselves Southerners. I have no idea who your husband is, GingerOfTheNorth, so taking his name off the list was (as I see it) his choice.
Did I misread his intentions?
Should I also remove your name from that list?
I have tried to be as accommodating as I can be with the apparently sticky issue of whether Maryland is or is not a Southern state. Right now, there are four (including you) whose names are on the Maryland list because they have said they consider themselves to be Southerners. There are also seven who are still listed because I haven’t heard from them.
The other names that were on the list at the time of the OP have been removed as a result of confirmation that they don’t want to be included there.
I do not know how to make this any clearer.
I’ve lived all of my 51 years in the Free State. In my experience, Northerners consider Marylanders to be Southerners, and Southerners consider us Northerners. There’s no winning.
My parents came to Maryland from New York City, and perhaps for that reason, I have never considered myself a Southerner.
Now, let me be clear: I am not bashing the South. There is much about the South that is charming and admirable. Southerners in general are more polite than Northerners. Most Southern children are raised to address all elders as “sir” and “ma’am.” Southerners are at once more formal but more relaxed than Northerners.
But whether by nature or nurture, I’m just one of those rude and uptight Northerners.
Thanks for your response. I sympathize with the “no winning” part more than I would have thought earlier. In a way, Tennessee and other states to the north of the Gulf States become part of that gray area because of the tendency to experience snow. To some who have replied to these threads pertaining to The South, that’s a serious criterion for establishing the “southness” of things.
It’s no big deal in the scheme of things, but based on your stated preferences I’ll take your name off the Maryland list of “Southerners.” That reduces to six the number of names I had added to the file without first having that person’s permission or awareness. I’m trying to undo that mistake.
I will direct you to my post in that other thread:
My husband, Weirddave, may say that he is Southern. I don’t know. He has not responded to any of these threads, and I do not speak for him.
Thanks for the reply. As of now I still have Weirddave on the list under Maryland in the summary file. I put his name there myself since, as you say, he hasn’t posted in any of these threads. My choice to do some “digging” in other threads to find people whose Location stated outright that they were in one of the “Southern” states (as listed in the OP of the “Southern USA Dopers” thread) is what led to the issue this thread is trying to resolve.
In simplest terms:
I’m the one who added over 10 names to the Maryland list.
Rather than just remove them all I have chosen to get feedback on whether or not those people consider themselves Southern.
Those who have said (in effect) “I’m a Southerner” are still on the list.
Those who have said (in effect) “I am not a Southerner” have been removed from that list.
Those who have yet to say anything are still on the list but will be removed before the next posting of that summary data, which I had indicated I would do after the 200th post there. The count is now at 195 posts there so I’ll be dealing with that issue soon.
My latest thinking is just to put a “?” by the Maryland section until I have received some word from the remaining six in question (which includes Weirddave).
I truly wish I had never made the choice to go looking for additional names to “fill out” the list of Southern Dopers. That choice has caused me way more trouble than I bargained for.
I had hoped this geographical breakdown might be interesting and fun as opposed to a refighting of the Civil War.

I hope your entry at the new thread that Antonius Block started yesterday – Dopers now based in the USA, but born elsewhere: stand and be counted, please – has helped you avoid feeling left out.
I also hope I have not offended you still further by trying to clarify my position on the issue(s).
Peace
I can’t explain it except as an oversight, but I’m just now seeing this post. I’m adding your data to the summary file.
Sorry for the delayed response.
Nope, I’m not offended in the least. I don’t think it’s a good or bad thing to be a Southerner or Yankee or Northerner or whatever, I’m just none of the above.
Good to hear. And I agree that it’s not a matter of good or bad.
