I’m very glad that my friend in Orlando was not caught in the massacre. She is now asking if there is anywhere that is safe. She spent her career working for a gun manufacturer, so in addition to the shock and horror, guilt is also bothering her.
I figure that the right to publicly promote hatred in the guise of religion combined with a right to firearms and high capacity clips is a toxic mixture. Folks, if you want to be free, you need to get your act together as a nation and recognize that freedom requires reasonable limitations. Unfortunately, many of you will post condolences while at the same time cover your eyes and ears to protect your sensibilities from the elephant in the corner of the room.

There are reports that someone was apprehended in Los Angeles, headed to their Pride Festival with an arsenal. Whether it’s related in any way is unknown. 
This is so awful, I am just heartbroken.
Perhaps we should just use the term “religious terrorism” as that would cover all these acts and any committed by non-Islamics in the name of their religion too.
Saw a FB picture of people lined up to donate blood for the victims in the hospital. The post said that the ban on gays donating was being lifted. No idea if that is true. I hope it is. There’s not much else that people can to do help right now.
The elephant in the room? Over 300 million people in this country have access to firearms. Over 300 million hear the craziest stuff or read about it on the Internet. A tiny fraction do these large crimes. How do you screen for that fraction of people that this toxic mix makes dangerous without causing larger problems? If there was a known solution with known consequences people would implement it.
Governments with lots of power have killed a million times what this individual did. So is the correct answer to change the relative power between citizen and state? It’s tragic but with modern technology and imperfect systems of government what’s the best solution?
They’ll have to dramatically increase security. LGBT events are a target rich environment for Islamic terrorists. Not just in the US but worldwide.
How many events are scheduled for Gay pride month? A handful? Dozens?

But of the thousands of things that can be used to kill other humans, today’s fun was brought by over-the-counter machines (with warranties) built specifically for the purpose. It’s a hell of a lot harder to build a “successful” WMD (works, doesn’t’ kill the maker, has desired effect) than it is to walk into a store and say, “Gimme one of those, and a thousand rounds to go with it.”

What’s your point? I can go buy a gun today and thousands of rounds. It’s not hard. The thousands of guns for sale in my little city aren’t out shooting people up. People do that. People with messed up minds. That’s what needs fixing.
