Yup, sure does.
Has the shooter’s motivations been revealed yet?
According to his dad, he saw two guys kissing in public and got pissed off.
I’m so proud of how my community is rallying. Lines to donate blood are stretching for blocks, Equality Florida has raised more than $200K, and Orlando Publix stores are taking online orders to deliver water and cookies to those standing in line to donate blood.
That’s where our focus should be. Not fingerpointing or blaming, but seeing what we can do to help.
They are not mutually exclusive, and reducing future killings is certainly up there with water and cookies.
I think it’s entirely reasonable to talk about good policy at any time. Not necessarily anywhere – I wouldn’t get into any political discussions with people who just lost their family – but on an internet message board, I think it’s appropriate to talk about what policies might reduce the likelihood of attacks like this in the future.
Maybe we should be stock piling cookies for the next shooting!
I mean it’s that or maybe we can make sure it’s not easy for people to get their hands on these types of weapons. But definitive not both at the same time. That would be like patting your heading and rubbing your tummy simultaneously. No one can do that, it’s scientifically proven.
I wasn’t aware about the tummy thing but I’ve heard it’s proven that most people can’t lick their own armpit.
This being the Dope and all, there is some zero sum number of Dopers who are now testing/tasting that/their postulate/pit.
And then brag about it.
That will be updated on the Onion soon now that this has happened.
Regularly was the key word.
How did I know that Obama was going to use this as an opportunity to lambast the gun laws? God forbid he should focus on Islamic extremism.
We were getting ready to drive over to donate (from NSB) but the places we called said they were at capacity. Can’t believe they are finally taking donations from the guys, about time!!
Probably because it was the biggest mass shooting in US history. Just guessing.
Any thoughts on if there was a big fuckup by the police? Did they sit around for three hours while people were being killed? I thought that was one of the lessons of the Columbine High School Massacre.
Simple. Nutters are going to try to kill, regardless of motivation – Islamic, Christian, non-affiliated. Easy access to auto and semi-auto guns with large clips makes it easy for them to kill. The USA’s refusal to seriously deal with the ease of access to such munitions makes it stand out from other first world nations.
Of course it’s appropriate. The people who originated the idea that it’s not appropriate don’t want the discussion to occur anytime, but they can’t say that.
Apparently the shooter had been investigated *twice *by the FBI for ties to Islamist extremist groups and both times they did not find anything to charge him with.
Great job guys.
Yeah, they really should have used their pre-crime detectors and framed him for something so they could prevent this. When will the restrictions on pre-crime finally be abolished!
As a member of the LGBT community, I have to commend the heroic actions of the police during this tragedy. They risked their own lives to protect the victims, stop the perpetrator and prevent further loss of lives. I’m old enough to remember a time when the police routinely harrassed and violated us . . . and often worse. And if we were attacked by a crazed civilian, it woudn’t be unusual for the police to aid and abet. But those days are behind us. Today, in Orlando and throughout the country, those whose job it is to protect us are no longer our enemies. They are our heroes. I’m hopeful that the day will be soon, when the Black community will be able to say the same thing.
