Mass Effect Legendary - my thoughts while I play these games (spoilers as I play)

Yes, it does. But it’s a fake Rachni Queen created by the Reapers. If you let her go, she wipes out some of your War Assets.

Did you take Tali on the Rachni mission?

I don’t have Tali yet! She’s not on the ship yet! I’m kind of just hoping she shows up at some point. Haven’t heard a single word.

A question for @Mahaloth — do you feel like we’re adding to or taking away from your experience discovering these games by giving you all these hints and tips and guidance toward better outcomes?

I ask because my own experience was self guided. I didn’t look up any walkthroughs during my first plays, and there were many places where I knew I’d messed up somewhere but I kept powering through because I found the unfolding story so compelling. I wonder if our constant guardrails, as it were, might be decreasing your free exploration of the story.

In particular, there’s something coming up in the third game, a critical narrative hinge point, where the prerequisites have to be set up in a fairly specific way, or you’re facing a devastating no-win choice. The first time I played, I had no idea what I was getting into, and what unfolded was one of the biggest gut-punches I’ve ever experienced in any storytelling medium. In my subsequent playthroughs, I made sure to avoid that, and I’ve never seen it since — but I’m still happy I got to see it, because it hammered home just how well these games work, how deeply involving they are, when they’re really clicking.

Do you feel like we’re robbing you of some of those genuine surprises with all of our careful nudges toward the happiest story paths?

Tali during and after the rachni mission in ME3.

Not at all. I haven’t really taken any paths guided from here, I don’t think.

@Mahaloth, do you remember if you let the asari woman on Virmire, the one who was working with Saren, go in ME1? If she survived, she would’ve been working with the krogan doctor in ME2.

I did and she was there. FemShep expressed regret in releasing her since she went on to to Krogan research.

I’m doing the genophage cure mission now. Very much feels like a culminating mission, more than most of the others I have done so far. I’m not yet done with it, but I have decided:

I am curing them for real no matter what. They deserve a chance even if it is a risk that they rise up to brutalize the region.

I went back and finished the Genophage cure mission and:

  • Mordin sacrifice himself
  • They were cured
  • Eve and Wrex will be around to lead/help in the battle

We had a great cutscene that rivaled Kong vs. Godzilla.

A powerful, great mission. The best moments in Mass Effect 3 so far.

Okay.

If Wrex is still alive and you choose not to cure the genophage, the only way you can prevent it is by killing Mordin. It’ll still appear to everyone involved that the genophage has been cured, but then Wrex will find out, confront you on the Citadel, and you’ll be forced to kill him. “And by the way, I’m withdrawing the krogan support for your homeworld. If my people die, so do yours!” There is no way to prevent this.

If Wrex did not survive ME1, Urdnot is led by a more traditionally aggressive krogan named Urdnot Wreav. I think he gets cacked by Kalross in ME3, right? With Wrex dead, Wreav survives ME3 no matter what. You again have the choice of whether to cure the genophage. If you don’t, Wreav will never know. And Mordin can be convinced not to cure the genophage without sacrificing himself. He’ll just disappear.

There are some more variables depending on whether Mordin survived ME2, and whether you saved Maelon’s data. I believe if you didn’t save Maelon’s data, Eve dies.

It definitely contained tons of references to previous decisions. It was a great mission and moment in the series. I saw:

  • Mordin sing his song again as he died. I’m glad I saw the full performance in ME2
  • EVE survive because I saved the data.
  • Wrex alive because of actions in ME1(I didn’t even realize this at the time was such a big deal)

It was a great culminating mission.

Note: EVI is great a side-character for now. She has a ton of unique dialogue about being not-alive. When we were running around during the Reaper attack on Krogan-planet, she said, “If I were organic, I’d be burning!”

Are you encouraging Joker to romance EDI?

I think so? I have seen a little bit of this along the way, but not too much so far. But, yeah, I’m kind of encouraging it. It’s strange. I haven’t seen a ton of this content yet.

Did you notice that the salarian councilor is played by Armin Shimerman, who plays Quark on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? And that the krogan who confronted you in ME2 after you fought the thresher maw in Grunt’s loyalty mission was played by Michael Dorn, who played Worf?

Speaking of which… were you able to kill the thresher maw in ME2? You only have to survive for a few minutes, but if you kill him, you get some unique dialogue. Did you do the Renegade interrupt against the trash-talking krogan before Grunt’s loyalty mission, and against the krogan clan leader during Mordin’s loyalty mission?

No, I did not to either.

I did kill the thresher maw, which generated a lot of comments about that not being done in years. I never do the renegade interrupts.

OH, MAN. Some of these Renegade interrupts you’re not doing, you’re missing out on great stuff. Renegade interrupt against Gatatog Uvenk prior to Grunt’s loyalty mission:

Renegade interrupt against Weyrloc Clanspeaker:

Renegade interrupt in Thane’s recruitment mission:

Renegade interrupt in Miranda’s loyalty mission:

And in Archangel’s recruitment mission.

Be advised that near the end of the game there’s an event where not doing a Renegade interrupt will result in the death of a major character.

Have you visited Ashley in the hospital?
