I heard both on NPR and NBC that the shooter’s parents were afraid of him, and had called the police on him in the past.
Actually, there are two brush fires in the area.
One is just off the 101 freeway. It actually runs east-west around here, though it’s still called the Northbound/Southbound 101.
The other is in the hills northward of the 101, not far from the Santa Susana reactor meltdown (Rocketdyne facility) in the hills between Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks. (The Reagan Museum/library where Republican debates are televised is not endangered by this one.)
The problem is that people are trying to get around the blockage of the 101 by taking the 23 and 118 freeways – or going over surface streets between the 101 and 118. However, the fire in the Simi hills is slowing things down even more from smoke and rubber-neckers.
The 2018 Wildfire season is in full tilt; It’s gonna be a long slow drive home.
–G!
I live in Santa Barbara. It’s east-west out by me too. I drove to Hollywood earlier today. Luckily I left at 2:30 and took the 126. A couple of friends of mine who were going intending to go to the same show as me are stuck and won’t make it.
oops
That sound about right. The standard mag for my .45 isn’t legal in CA. The CA mags have a false bottom.
I don’t know what an extended mag would hold. Maybe 20-24?
Never looked into it. Coyotes only need a single round, if you can hit them, and if you miss, it sure chases them away with the report.
High-capacity mags were indeedoutlawed in California in 2016, with enforcement to begin in 2017. Enforcement has been held up by a court case. The court case was brought by five gun owners and the California Rifle & Pistol Association — the official state association of the National Rifle Association.
At least we’re done saying “thoughts and prayers” and #randomAmericancitystrong
We can finally declare both are officially cliche!
Unfortunately, we can’t stop mass shootings in America.
307 mass shootings for 2018, so far, but it felt like there was a lull over the summer.
We didn’t hear about most of them, because they were between family members or other people who knew each other, which doesn’t make any of the victims any less dead.
I just came from another board where a lot of the people thought this was yet another “Incel” incident. I got walloped for saying, “And how do any of you know that? Did you know him?” :smack:
This morning before going to work, I read on one news site that a neighbor had heard him shoot a weapon before but did not call the police.
I think I’ve been watching different news. If anything, they’ve been coming fast and furious.
Only in the USA can you survive one mass shooting, only to die in another mass shooting a year later.
That’s like the darkest possible satire. I hope it virally epitomises the need for change.
Unfortunately, it could get darker: There are now people that have survived two mass shootings and could die in a third.![]()
There was a Columbine survivor who was also at Virginia Tech; IIRC, this person witnessed both but was not injured either time - not physically, anyway.
The advert I’m getting from Tapatalk on this thread is mini-handheld crossbows.

A few thoughts:
-
Mass shootings are barely news in America now. What’s that? 15, 25, 50 killed by one white male with an AR-15? Just another day in paradise. Show’s over, folks. Nothing to see here.

I almost have some sympathy for the gunman. Obviously, what he did was horrific, but Americans can’t just send hundreds of thousands of men and women in the primes of their lives into years of life or death struggle and not expect some consequences when they return. The war in Afghanistan is the invisible war. Everyone puts little yellow ribbons on their cars and says “Support the Troops” but when they come back home…we hardly give a fuck. Hell, how many homeless veterans are there now?
We’re a culture of cliches. We’re full of shit.
Most of the perpetrators of these attacks are not veterans. Not all veterans have any form of psychological issues and only a minority of those who do have issues would take them out on anyone else.
I’m not aware of any shooting sprees perpetrated by veterans of World War II, Korea, or Vietnam, all of which produced far more veterans than the “War on Terror.” And I can’t even think of any other mass shooters in the past decade who are veterans, besides this one guy being discussed here. There’s been a whole menagerie of disturbed individuals with varying backgrounds and ages, but military service doesn’t appear to be a common factor at all.
Howard Unruh, who killed 13 people in Camden, NJ in 1949, was a WWII veteran who was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Nidal Hasan, who AFAIK never served overseas, was in the military. How he got his education remains mysterious to me, even though it’s all been documented.
Oh shit, this one hit pretty close to home. One of the victims, Alaina Housley, 18, a freshman at Pepperdine, was a good long-time friend of my niece — Alaina and my niece grew up together.
