Massive measles outbreak - thank you, Andrew Fucking Wakefield

My God–Antibiotics in a vaccine and Polysorbate 80! When will this madness stop!

Hmmm…Polysorbate 80.

Oh look, my handbasket has arrived…

I was at the gym this afternoon and they always have one of those women-oriented afternoon TV shows on titled Merideth (I think). I don’t normally pay attention but they had Close Captioning on and I saw “vaccine”. They had some blonde bimbo (obviously an actress or model) talking about the dangers of vaccines. It was the soft-pedal version: “I vaccinate my child but slow it down”. The host just nodded her head. I was steamed.

Here’s the spite a pro-vax friend of mine has been through. I have a huge pile of hate mail. My daughters have been called “obviously vaccine damaged,” “funny looking,” “ugly brats” and a whole host of other names I don’t want to think about. Several of my friends have been threatened at work including my co-author. The National Vaccine Information Center ran an article that contained people making physical threats of violence against me.

Meanwhile I’m being called all kinds of names by an idiot in another thread on vaccines because I’m not being nice enough to these people.

I wonder how eels feel about vaccination. :dubious:

I made a typo and wrote morays instead of morals in another thread. Does that really bother you that much to make a comment about it?

So a FB friend of mine made some comments about the recent outbreaks and I was effectively explaining to him how vaccines and herd immunity actually work when along came someone who dropped a whole bunch of antivax links & videos on the thread. The lead one of which was this piece of dreck.

Thanks for the outbreaks.

You’re not being funny or witty or insightful. You’re just being an asshole.

Wheeeen some kids end up dead 'cause of what Wakefield said… that’s immoral dee dee diddly dee

I assumed you were trying for “mores” and autocorrect gave you eels. I got a good chuckle out of it.

I’m sorry to hear about the harassment you’re facing. You’re braver than I am for putting your neck out. You and Kolga are heroes for our time.

OK, so encountering another anti-vaxxer in said FB thread I found the latest game is that MMR is ‘part of a series’ of health & environmental issue that leads to Gastro-Intestinal issues that leads to autism.

This is fairly new to me, and seems might thin. Has anyone done any debunking of it or has anyone actually produced any evidence for even part of it?

It’s debunked by all the previous studies that show 0 correlation between MMR and autism.

As Naita says, it comes pre-debunked. It is like trying to present a “scientific” explanation for why zebras have spots - it doesn’t matter how many bullshit explanations you present for why zebras have spots, the fact that zebras don’t have spots proves them all nothing more than hot air.

This claim largely dates back to Andrew Wakefield and his fraudulent, unethical research.

“The possibility of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism/(inflammatory bowel disease) was suggested primarily by one group of researchers led by Dr Andrew Wakefield in the United Kingdom. Dr Wakefield’s studies suggested that measles virus in the gut caused a new syndrome of IBD which resulted in decreased absorption of essential vitamins and nutrients through the intestinal tract. It was suggested that this in turn caused developmental disorders such as autism, or worsening of symptoms in children already diagnosed with autism, so-called ‘regressive autism’. Although this theory generated a lot of media attention, the studies on which it is based have many significant weaknesses. Over 20 subsequent studies and many expert reviews have shown no association between MMR and these diseases”

Like other antivax memes, this one keeps getting recycled despite its lack of validity.

I haven’t been reading this whole thread, but I don’t think anyone mentioned Tuesday’s episode of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore (i.e., the show of January 27, 2015). The program replaced The Colbert Report and runs in the post The Daily Show slot. That episode was about vaccinations. In one segment, Larry had four guests to discuss the issue (as is normal for his show), one of whom was Zoey O’Toole, a member of the “Thinking Moms Revolution”, who is an anti-vaccinations activist.

So did he take her apart? Or is he a stupid shit?

No, neither he nor the other three guests agreed with her and they challenged her, but they also let her make her ridiculous arguments. She mentioned, for example, a supposed FDA whistleblower who claimed that the FDA suppressed data showing that black boys who had the MMR vaccine later had fewer incidents of autism. Of course, no one on the show was prepared to challenge her on the facts of this. I thought her most ridiculous argument was that “parents should have a choice” about vaccines. As far as I know parents do have a choice; no one is vaccinating children at gunpoint. Of course schools have the option of not allowing unvaccinated children to attend school.

And, also, it might affect people who are unable to get vaccinated—like cancer patients—and it might affect the herd immunity of society as a whole. Refusing vaccination is not a personal decision. It’s a decision that affects society and the people around you.

More of a personal observation but I noticed that my ‘Crunchy Granola’ friends on FB who are not exactly well-off financially are screaming bloody murder at the idiots who have not vaccinated their children. Wheras the friends who are wealthy Orange county types seem to be desperately on the defensive about their decisions and their anti-vaxx preaching. This certainly says a lot.

There’s some important information here that needs to be spread to help people learn the truth. http://howdovaccinescauseautism.com/
