Actually, it was a measles outbreak. The whooping cough came along before they could get the kids’ shots up-to-date.

And in breaking news, the Australian Government is now going to refuse certain payments (notably a family tax benefit and child care rebate) to all who defer from immunizing their kids, unless exempt for MEDICAL REASONS ALONE.

So, no more exemption upon religious grounds (previously, the only recognised religion that could claim exemption was the Christian Scientists, with only 1000 members). But now, even THEY have to submit their kids to a jab if they want to claim the government payments.

Here’s the interview. I think his tin foil hat is showing. I’m actually surprised at how much Bill Maher, himself sympathetic promoter of pseudoscience in medicine, confronts him about the case against him.

“We stopped because we were scared and didn’t know who to trust,” she wrote. “Was the medical community just paid off puppets of a Big Pharma-Government-Media conspiracy? Were these vaccines even necessary in this day and age? Were we unwittingly doing greater harm than help to our beloved children? So much smoke must mean a fire, so we defaulted to the ‘do nothing and hope nothing bad happens’ position.”

I give her points for making the change of mind. Most anti-vaxxers whose kids get the preventable disease find amazing ways to rationalize what happened. Either in the ‘well now they have a natural immunity’ approach or in the ‘This was obviously given to them by the kids that were vaccinated.’ technique.
