Mating habits of camels

Some friends and are were chatting last night, and the subject turned to those wildlife shows on TLC or Discovery. One friend of mine, Stacy, claimed that her boyfriend had watched one about camels a while ago and on this show, it said that the female camel never goes into heat, and that, in order to facilitate breeding, a whole lot of male camels must surround the female, biting her and holding her down, while the first camel does his thing, and then he in turn helps hold the female down while another takes his turn, and so on. It sounded to the rest of us like Stacy’s boyfriend was just having a bit of fun with her, but Stacy insists it’s the truth. So, does anyone know if this is actually how it happens?

No. Actualy, they hump! TaDa!! Thanks ladies and gentlemen, I’ll be here all week. Tip your waitresses. Good night.

Yeah, I did hear that they procreate just like me and my friends do.

Maybe she was a little confused. When a female animal goes into heat she often attracts a lot of males by her scent. Major sexual harassment. They pester her endlessly, trying to climb on. The female just trots ahead a few paces until they fall off. Then the males fight amongst themselves to determine who gets the next shot, and if he’s lucky and the female chooses him, she’ll remain still until he’s finished fertilizing her. I’m not sure about the mating habits of camels in particular, but it could be that the female needs a group of males around her before she can come into heat.

Seems like the males fight each other, not the females. Fairly usual mating behaviour.

Kyberneticist, where did you get that quote? Is it on the web?
