Matt Drudge: hysterical demagogue

*I saw Slick Nick fall over the X-mas tree
He was a Whole different man from
What mom and dad told me
Spillin’ Jack Daniels all over the drapes
Spray-painting a bad finger over the fireplace
Tatoos on his arms and knees
I never thought Santa Claus Would be such a sleaze ! But…

Fishbone, Slick Nick You Devil You

There are at least three alternate Santa movies making the rounds this year already, including one other Santa-as-robber.

What I’d like to see is a movie about the 1927 Santa Claus bank robbery in Texas, a caper which resulted in six deaths, a massive manhunt and a lynching. Now there’s a salutary holiday tale for the kiddies.

Will your next pitting be that of the local italian restaurant because they don’t have sushi on the menu? If you don’t like what they have to offer, don’t go back.

Something I read a few weeks ago: The constitutional protection accorded to the freedom of speech and of the press is not based on the naive belief that speech can do no harm but on the confidence that the benefits society reaps from the free flow of ideas outweigh the costs society endures by receiving reprehensible or dangerous ideas. Appellate Court: Texas v. Flynt

I may not like what you say, print, or put on your site, but I’ll defend your right to do so. If I fail to act in your protection, my own freedoms of expression are compromised.

I visit Grudge at least once a day, same as Buzzflash

Partisan as all get out, and so what? In both instances, they are a compilation of news from other sources, just a link-box. In both instances, the headlines tend to be hysterically exaggerated, but I’m a big boy, I can take it.

Libel is not protected free speech.

Drudge was instrumental in killing the CBS Reagan movie. Writing a dishonest report about this movie could conceivably hurt its box office. It’s not a question of just disagreeing with Drudge, he’s flat out lying this time.

Sounds like he needs a kitty!

Let’s not forget that he’s also an adulterer, as described in I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

Dio…if you were anymore transparent, you would be Saran Wrap.

Liberal is good.

Conservative is bad.

We get it.

Please for the love of God move on.

There’s nothing political about this rant. I read Drudge every day. His politics don’t bother me and he gets a lot of good scoops. I just think that in this case he’s really distorting the facts and may potentially damage the commercial viability of a director that I like and who doesn’t deserve this crap. Right and left has nothing to do with it.

Diog, bad publicity is good publicity. People who would otherwise never have heard of this movie are now interested in seeing if it’s as bad as all that.

Miramax is looking at this and saying, “Hey, we don’t have to spend as much to advertise the movie. Yay!”

If it hadn’t been for the outrage, nobody would have seen Last Temptation of Christ.

Right up there with the idiots are Fox News giving Al Franken all the free P.R. The fact that Drudge laughably biased is old news- the fact he is none too bright is somewhat surprising.

But honestly- does it matter? His 15 minutes of fame is just about over.

I see your point but Drudge did damage CBS with his reports about the Reagan movie. I’m worried that his less than honest reports about Bad santa will fuel yet another barrage of right-wing media assaults and drive down potential box office. I have no doubt that Bill O’Reilly will make it part of his “Talking Points” memo and legions of Fox fans, etc. will stay away from the film for the wrong reasons.

Incidentally, I can understand why people would think that I’m just using this as an excuse to attack Drudge for poitical reasons. I realize that I may have let slip a hint or two about my own political sensibilities from time to time but really, in this one case I’m just pissed about seeing someone publicly trash a movie without just cause.

I really haven’t had anything against Matt Drudge in the past and IMO he hasn’t been shy about releasing some pretty nasty stuff about conservatives on his site as well as liberals. I posted this rant as a movie lover not as a liberal.

Admit it, Dio. You just hate gay guys with stupid hats.

That would explain the red velvet suits and the fact the he and Mrs. Claus never had kids…

Oh, you were talking about Drudge. Nevermind.

"Down in the workshop, all the elves were making toys
For the good gentile girls, and the good gentile boys
When the boss busted in, nearly scared 'em half to death
Had a rifle in his hand, and cheap whiskey on his breath
From his beard to his boots, he was covered in ammo
Like a big fat drunk, drisguntled yuletide Rambo
And he smiled as he said, with a twinkle in his eye,
“Merry Christmas to all! Now you’re all gonna DIE!!!”

The night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he’d been gettin’ a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain"

-The Weirdest of Als, “The Night Santa Went Crazy” (quoting from memory, so I hope memory serves well)

Ah, good times. Good times…

Anyway, Guin, don’t speak too soon. If I remember correctly, at the end of the song there was mention of Mrs. Claus selling the movie rights. So I guess we’ll have to wait until CBS releases the docu-drama “Red, White, and Bloody: The Claus Story”. Then we’ll see Drudge drudge-up this exchange:

Mrs. Claus: But, Honey, what about the non-gentile girls and boys?
Mr. Claus: Those who live in Jehova, die with coal in their stockings.

Drudge is gay?!

As a blue horse.

blink

Is it a gay blue horse?

The article describes what anonymous studio folk are outraged about. The article isn’t about condemning the movie, it’s about what makes it outrageous to some.

Drudge may have splashed the banner across the top of his page in big, bold style; but is anyone questioning the facts of the article? Is anyone questioning whether some studio folk are outraged that a movie produced by a part of the Disney empire shows Santa Claus getting drunk and screwing a barmaid he just met?

It won’t keep me from seeing the movie. I read the article when he posted it and chuckled that people are going to get so twisted about it. I thought it sounded like another Shakes the Clown.

I didn’t think Drudge was trying to get the movie killed. I think he was just muckraking again, which is what he does.

As in self-hating Log Cabin queen in the Terry Dolan/Roy Cohn mode.
