Matt Gaetz being investigated for sex with 17 year old girl (DOJ declines to charge 2023-02-15)

As much as I hate to defend Cuomo (and I think he should resign), he hasn’t been accused of anything illegal, “just” unethical. Gaetz is accused of similar work-place harassment allegations (showing pictures of the women he’s slept with, having contests about who can bed the most interns and aides, etc.) on top of the actual criminal investigations.

Far more importantly, Democrats.

Only in the strictest definition of “bipartisan.” In realityland, the parties treat these kinds of allegations very differently.

It’s a bipartisan problem in the sense that a Republican who brags about grabbing women by the you-know-whosits is met with Republican yawns, and a Democratic Senator who poses for a picture feigning a more upstairs grab gives up his Senate seat and resigns.
Cuomo won’t face up, and receives calls from prominent Democrats to do the right thing. Gaetz won’t face up, defends himself in the third person, and although not receiving much outright Republican support, faces zero Republican condemnation. Just a little distancing.
Republicans won’t distance for covid-19, but put Gaetz in the room and suddenly you get some distancing.

I haven’t been following Cuomo’s situation with a fine-toothed comb but my impression is that a couple of the allegations would be considered criminal.

When it comes to sexual crimes I’d rather not get into a “what’s worse” argument. If I could only get rid of one it would be Gaetz for sure but everything I’ve seen so far on Gaetz is from anonymous sources (right?). Cuomo has had multiple women publicly come out and accuse him of harassment. Neither one of them should skate by.

Agreed.

Based on the latest revelations from the investigation into the trip to the Bahamas, Matt Gaetz deserves a sincere apology. He’s not a sex trafficker, he’s an international sex trafficker.

Not a man of mystery, though.

Maybe. Franken was sacrificed so that Democrats could (rightfully) continue to hammer away at Trump and his pussy grabbing. It was the height of the MeToo movement. I thought it was a bit of an overreaction but I don’t mind the over-correction.

Cuomo, while a less prominent political figure, has done a lot worse than Franken (albeit without damning pictures) and the response seems to be much more muted. There was an editorial in the NYT a few weeks ago about how some Democrats thought jettisoning Franken was wrong and weren’t supporting Cuomo’s detractors.

We’ll see. I hope I’m wrong and that the voice for Cuomo’s resignation continues to grow but I’m not seeing it right now.

He can deny it as many times as he wants but digital forensics are digital forensics. I doubt he covered his tracks as well as he thinks, but it’s not clear he tried to cover anything.

But… but… he deleted his cookies!

“House Ethics Committee Investigating GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz Of Florida”
“The Committee is aware of public allegations that Representative Matt Gaetz may have engaged in sexual misconduct and/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift, in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct,” the panel’s chairman, Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., and ranking member, Rep. Jackie Walorski, R-Ind., said in a joint written statement."

Jim Wright notes that Gaetz is in Congress and “congress” is just another word for sex.

Yes, that’s an R. Adam Kinziger, also R is, I think, the second by my count R to have any spine.

But but but… IOKIARDI

Those are still the rules, right?

Grabbing, groping, kissing someone unwilling is illegal as well as unethical. It is alleged that Cuomo has done that.

If it’s the same crack team that proved voter fraud last year, I’d guess the reporters have little to fear.

Then I would argue you shouldn’t engage in “both sides” arguments about this topic, since such arguments are inherently about saying that both sides are equally bad. The defense of such will always be showing that both sides are in fact not equally bad. So a comparison will be necessary.

Plus, well, you’re not really just comparing what Cuomo did vs. what Gaetz did. Since you’re talking about Democrats and Republicans, their reactions are also relevant. And Democrats were much quicker to turn against Cuomo, and call for his resignation.

That said, I would argue none of this is relevant to the topic of this thread, which about Gaetz, the investigations and evidence against him, and what should be the consequences. These are separate incidents that, as far as we know, have no connection to each other.

There’s a reason that “both sides” arguments get condemned as tu quoque and/or whataboutism. Ultimately, the outcome is always that they make the worse side look better, while making the better side look worse.

There’s a reason why “both sides” arguments are made by the right all the time. It’s actually an attempt to defend themselves. That’s what they do. They aren’t ever helpful in solving problems.

I find it awfully convenient when people like to argue that only the other side does the awful thing.

This is somewhat true, but only after women went public with their accusations. Right now the accusations against Gaetz are (to my knowledge) anonymous. If a couple of women come forward with public accusations then I expect that the republicans will drop Gaetz. As time goes on the calls for Cuomo to step down seem to have lessened.

The fact is that both of these men are scumbags and neither side has bragging rights until they are jettisoned.

Deeg.

Stop it.

One man was harassing staff.

The other was raping children.

Your #BothSidesism is disgusting. Get ahold of yourself and think about what you are comparing here.
