Found the answer to Florida’s rules.
Florida law allows Gov. Ron DeSantis to quickly call a special election, potentially allowing Gaetz’s replacement to be seated before the start of the next Congress on Jan. 3.
I still wouldn’t put it past Gaetz to run. He got two-thirds of the vote earlier this month.
He resigned, right? I wouldn’t think you can then un-resign.
Hulk Hogan…?
I fully expect it, but maybe he’ll go off to private practice and lectures.
I don’t think that he can keep his practices private in the future.
I love that the headline about this at the Huffington Post reads:
Gaetz Pulls Out!
Observed from Mueller, She Wrote, on Bluesky: “Matt Gaetz: the first person to last negative Scaramuccis.”
There is no way that he will go back into the House. If he does, the ethics report gets released. He will get a job as a talking head (heh) on a right wing political show of some kind.
What I’m wondering is if his political career is over? (One can hope so.)
He is no longer in Congress, and now no longer in consideration for the cabinet. He may have trouble getting elected for anything at this point. That’s assuming whatever was dug up about him doesn’t lead to criminal charges at some point.
Assuming the worst candidate is nominated first, this is good news. That being said, it’s hard to conceive of the clown car not adding a different clown. Aileen Cannon, anyone?
CNN were going to run some more allegations at 12:30. They phoned him for comments and then he withdrew at 12:24. Coincidence I’m sure
It’s kind of confusing – he resigned immediately his seat in the current 118th Congress, but he had been already reelected to a seat in the upcoming 119th Congress that swears in January 3. He had indicated he would not take that seat so we’d need to look closer to see if he in effect resigned his status as congressman-elect too.
I bet he was told that the Ethics Committee report would not be released unless he joins the 119th Congress. He’s going to be a Fox talking head before long.

a Fox talking head
“Talking forehead”, anyways.

It is not good news until the replacement is named. And it might be that he was originally picked to make the real pick look good in comparison.
I resist the final sentence above as both pure speculation and giving Trump a little too much credit for planing ability.
But I totally agree with the first sentence above.
If I can get a little paranoid myself, I wonder if Trump will give Gaetz a Senior Executive Service Justice Department consolation prize that (a) does not require senate confirmation and (b) allows elevation to the acting AG slot after 90 days, no confirmation required. Looking at the Plum Book, I see possibilities.
Trump needs to control the AG to lock up his enemies. Someone with only a superficial desire to please will just appoint special prosecutors of the sort who will take years to hand down indictments. Trump must know that.

He got two-thirds of the vote earlier this month.
[joke] Yeah, and he ran unopposed! [/joke]
Am I a Debbie Downer threadshitter for speculating that there will be an even worse AG nomination, and Gaetz will get appointed to something even more wildly inappropriate, and the news cycle will be dominated by “haha libs I bet you regret opposing Gaetz for AG”
ETA: should’ve read the thread, looks like this wasn’t an original thought at all. Jesus, this timeline is the worst.
Seen on the interwebs:
Gaetz not ready for the major leagues, returns to minors
Oof.
