That’s how long it took for Jim Brown to play the race card in regards to Clarett’s situation at tOSU.
For those folks not aware of the situation. Maurice Clarett is a sophomore running back at tOSU who has been in the news in the past few months for a variety of “incidents” ranging from skipping out of exams to accepting improper benefits.
Mr. Clarett has been withheld from playing time while tOSU sorts out this mess. Recently, Geiger indicated that Clarett would probably not be playing much, if at all this season because of these problems.
FWIW, I think there’s plenty of blame to go around for this ugly situation, starting with Clarett. I think Geiger and Tressle deserve some blame for their lack of initial candor in delaing with a lot of these accusations.
Can we leave the slavery metaphors out of this discussion though? It makes Mr Brown look like a fucking idiot.
Mr. Brown is a fucking idiot. When he was sentenced for domestic abuse he accused the judge of being part of “radical and extremist group of white upper-class women who target men of color, including Jim Brown.”
The judge was a member of the American Inns of Court which is an organization that mentors young attorneys. It was founded by Warren Burger, a former Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
I knew as soon as Jim Brown got involved that he’d say something like this.
Slavery, huh? A free education and an apprenticeship for a job that could earn Clarett millions of dollars? If that is slavery, sign me up. The question that I’ve had during all this, is how bad has Clarett screwed himself by not accepting his punishment and moving on?
I was listening to some of the Jim Rome show yesterday, I usually avoid it, because Rome is an idiot of the highest magnitude, but that is a different thread. He had on the God of Columbus - Archie Griffin, who said that at this point Clarett still hasn’t given anybody any straight answers.
How bad has he screwed himself? Not too badly. Worst case, as I see it, is that he sits out a year and then declares for the draft. Some team will surely take a chance on him. Mind you, he’s losing out on the opportunity to improve his game by playing at OSU, and he’s giving himself a reputation for being a selfish jerk, neither of which will improve his draft prospects.
I watched Clarrett last year a little bit, and I didn’t see all that much there. I think the kid’s abilities have been built up to make him a make or break player.
When I looked at some of the games, I saw huge holes being made by the O-line. “the” OSU is still going to have a great running game this year for that reason.
Regardless, he will probably sue the NFL to make himself available for next years draft instead of waiting another year.
I hope he sues to get into the NFL. Given that he couldn’t make it through an entire college season, I think Warren Sapp will end up eating him for lunch if he goes early.
This case is another good argument for having minor-league American football, so that kids like Clarett who have insufficient interest/skills for college don’t have to go through the farce of being “student athletes”.
Everyone around Columbus is dancing around what seems to be obvious, at least to the cynical: Clarett reported a ton of valuable goods stolen from the car he was using - then, oops, he must have exaggerated their value on the insurance claim. Otherwise, he had a whole bunch of goodies paid for by somebody - boosters, perchance? Think someone convinced him early on to claim that he’d just exaggerated the value?
I loved the response by one of the other football “student athletes” to the allegation that he’d had one or more college papers written for him to get through a course. The response was superbly grammatical and written in eloquent public relations-ese. See - he didn’t need anyone to write papers for him at all! He’s an English scholar!!
And oh yes, Jim Brown is an ass.
The NFL does not have an early-admissions program, so he’ll have to sue on a restraint-of-trade basis. But that’s worked in basketball already, so why not?
Agreed that he’s done at OSU after committing attempted fraud, and the only negative will be the loss of playing time. What the hell, the defense was more responsible than the offense for the title last year, and they won almost as easily without him as with him.
Jim Brown should take more opportunities to shut up, no question.
Clarett never filed an insurance claim. He exaggerated (or not) the value of the goods on the police report. Apparently this is a crime, but the local prosecuters have been quoted as saying it’s one they typically only pursue in conjunction with another charge, such as insurance fraud. So, since Clarett never filed a claim, it doesn’t appear he’ll be facing charges over this unless something else comes out.
It has long been my wish that the The Ohio State football team could have a university it could be proud of.
This is not new stuff friends. Anybody remember Howard Bobo, who had a board and pocket money job as the official The Ohio State University hurricane watcher—he was to look out for hurricanes approaching Upper Arlington and report any he saw to the athletic director’s secretary. How about the kid from Iowa, later a stand out sure-handed running back in the pros who fumbled three, three count ‘em three, times in the Rose Bowl. Each time inside the five yard line. The kid never did take his freshman core courses and kept his status as a full time student and eligible to play taking by bag classes on football in the athletic department. I’m sure others can think of any number of student-athletes whose standing as students at institutions of higher learning was a cunning fiction.
On the other hand, there are plenty of athletes who had a chance for a college education only because they were athletes and who achieved remarkable things in life. It cuts both ways. It’s like these boards. In any given number of entertaining, informed, articulate, rational posters there are bound to be a few jerks. The Ohio State University has just gotten more that its share of high visibility jerks this year.
As a current Buckeye I am damn tired of hearing Clarett this,Clarett that, Clarret won them the championship last year and they won’t win this year becuase he is gone.
Bull Fucking God Damn Horse Shit.
Our offensive line is top 3 in the country. Our defense is fucking outstanding. Krenzel is 5x more important to the offense that Clarret will be. The main reason they won last year is that they played as the Buckeyes not the Buck-I’s and Clarret is the biggest Buck-I on the team. Ross and Hall along with the rest of the offense has to be pissed off about this and will play with a chip on their shoulder for the entire year.
A related rant regarding the championship team last year.
I am tired of hearing that the team didn’t deserve to win it last year. What did they not go undefeated enough for you? Then they say well the Refs helped them win games last year the most prominent being the pass interference call in the end zone in the championship game. First off, the refs made a call that went Miami’s way in the last drive before overtime forcing OSU to punt.
Second if you can’t stop a team on 4th and 18 YOU DON’T FUCKING DESERVE TO BE CHAMPIONS. Miami should have won that game by stopping them before the controversial call.
Err I forgot to mention that ESPN had that same article up a couple days ago in place of the aforementioned quote was something to the effect that from this side of the coin it seems like Geiger has a hidden agenda. A hidden agenda? You mean he wants one of the top 10 running backs in country off his team?
Yeah, OK Amok, apologies for listing the wrong (alleged) crime.
Anyway, no one should be taking potshots at Maurice Clarett, for he is one of the Great Figures of history.
At least that’s what his former coach at Warren G. Harding High School says (Thom McDaniels, quoted in Jon Saraceno’s column in the 9/6 USA Today):
“He’s a contradiction, a genius in his own craft. Guys like Einstein and Beethoven were misunderstood. I know this isn’t physics or music, but football is an art form. And Maurice is not like everybody else as a player.”
I think Jim Brown is absoutely right. After all, would Geiger have dared suspend any white player who lied to the NCAA?
Since he first arrived on campus, every time he has publicly opened his mouth, Clarett has made himself look like a bigger tool. From his musing about going to the NFL after his freshman year (Just 5 games into that same year, I might add) to saying right after the national championship game that “this doesn’t mean anything to me,” he’s shown himself to be either a complete idiot or mentally defective. He’s a near-complete embarrassment to the school, and I don’t blame Tressel one bit for barring him from even practicing.
Lizard, OSU class of 2000.
