BD- Considering the above-listed offenses are the most common for young sports figures and the ones we hear about on an almost too-often basis, yes, he did(well, no he didn’t HAVE to, but it fits).
When a sports figure pops up on the screen(especially if he’s a Dallas Cowboy, har har), I run through the above offenses in a guess to find out what the maroon is being accused of. IT’s almost always one of those “options” the coach mentioned.
Umm I was being sarcastic. As in Doug Williams seems to have lowered the bar for reasonable behavior (“ain’t no problem”) so much that it seemed like a natural progression to not consider rape a “big deal”. Hello Bobby Knight.
However, what offenses would you have included in your statement? I mean, his school offered him Perks, it’s not as if he committed one of the above offenses that I would consider a “problem” or a “headache”, or that he engaged in some sort of moral turpitude making him a “bad person”.
The coach was comparing his “perk” offense with things that should legitimately be considered “bad”.
Clarette has had several things that any reasonable person would classify as “problems” while at tOUS
skipped out on a final exam
receiving “extra benefits” woth thousands of dollars.
lying (or at best misleading) officials at tOSU about the allegations involving his behavior
“Geiger said that Clarett was suspended because he did not abide by the NCAA’s Bylaw 10, which compels athletes and coaches to answer truthfully when confronted by university or NCAA questions.”
he’s going to be charged with falsifying a report
“Ohio State star running back Maurice Clarett will be charged with lying about items that were stolen from him out of a car, a city attorney spokesman said Tuesday.”
To say “ain’t no problem with the kid” seems …ummm, I dunno…ridiculous.
If it seemed that Clarett was repentent…had owned up to what he did, had shown improvement…then it makes sense to say something like “He made mistakes…he’s turned his behavior around, so we’re giving him a second chance at Grambling”. But. Clarett hasn’t…instead surrounding himself with shill apologists like Jim Brown
Williams seems to be saying as long as you don’t get caught raping someone or doing drugs…COME ON DOWN.
Thanks, BD. The link you supplied to your OP didn’t have ANY of that info in it. puts thing in better perspective to someone who doesn’t follow collegiate sports on a daily basis.
Well, I’m the biggest non-fan of the NCAA’s “amateur atheletics” rules, so I don’t particularly worry if a person violates those. Clarett violated NCAA rules and did dumb things to cover up those violations.
The only one I really care about is falsifying a police report, that’s real life, not NCAA fantasyland.
