I just noticed that the /.ed LotR thread is pushing twenty pages. Before the board upgrade a thread would usually make it five or so pages before a mod would close it due to board strain. Since the upgrade I haven’t seen a mod close a single thread due to length. Was the upgrade so good that thread length is now irrelevent?
i’m waiting to see if it reaches 200000 views or 1000 replies first…
It may be that closing the thread due to size would appear unreasonable or heavy-handed to all the non-members that are currently following the thread.
We used to regularly close threads when they reached 5 or 10 pages in the bad old days when it seemed long threads were a drain on resources. They no longer seem to be as much of a problem as they used to be, so we usually let them grow.
It just hit 1,000/197,378.
(Of course, I cheated by actually making the 1,000th post).

Also of note for the record: at this time the thread has fallen to half way down the page and is at at 1,009/198,620.
I haven’t been monitoring it continuously, of course, but this is the first time that I’ve seen it out of the top 5 on the page.
Well, it’s back in the top three again with 1016 posts and 199212 (!) thread views.
Moderators: Is there any plan to take action on the thread if it gets too long, for whatever reason?
I can even answer my own question (after a bit of research.)
The LOTR thread is the only one in Cafe Society with more than 1,000 replies.
There have been 3 threads in MPSIMS with more than 1,000 replies.
There have been no other threads in other forums that exceeded 1,000 replies.
So the answer is “Four dopers can say they’ve made the 1,000th post to a thread”.
Ah, but did one poster have the 1000th post in more than one of those MPSIMS threads? 
It went 1,017/200,000.

I won’t search again now that the server load is so high, but a week or so ago “Funny things said during sex” in MPSIMS was the highest with just over 38,000 views. A record well and truly smashed. 
Thanx for letting me know, i had to go to bed for work, so i couldn’t stay up checking on it all night. It would have drove me crazy if i didn’t know which came first (though i suspected 1000 replies), but i’m weird like that
