When will that LOTR thread dip to the second page?

I’m betting not until mid-February, what do you think?

I’ll go with that, though to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in spring unless the Mods think differently…

Well, the link is still being posted in places that I hadn’t seen it previously, so it’s become The Thread That Will Not Die!

Frankly, I’m of a mind to keep it going as long as possible just to see its effect on the server and if it bogs the board down any. The length of the thread doesn’t seem to have too much effect so I’ll keep it open until it seriously starts affecting board behavior.

Eventually, of course, some brave Mod is going to have to make the perilous journey to cast the thread into the fires of Mount Slashdot.

Looks like THAT job has my name all over it, as, unfortunately, Eutychus happens to be a LOTR ner---- ah, an aficionado of the classic fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Let me know when to shitcan it, so’s I can pack a lunch.

Ike’s never read the books.

He doesn’t know what’s going to happen to him when he tries to throw the thread into the fires.

Heh heh heh …

I was wondering about that, Euty. Wasn’t the limit about 15 pages at one time? ::Thinking back to the original ‘Rochambo arena’ thread…:: Did the limit increase after the vB upgrade?

Drewbert, I asked that question a little while ago and was told that thread length no longer matters since it seems to have little effect on the board.

Well it’ll be interesting to see if there is some sort of ‘post’ or ‘view’ or ‘page’ event horizon for threads, after which said number is exceeded, the rest of the board is distorted by the mere presence of the humongous beast.

How many new members have we gotten from that thread? A lot of the people posting to it have 10 posts max.

What, no link:

Isn’t this very thread already a distortion extending to the furthest reaches of the Board?

But I must nitpick, nonetheless: The presence of an event horizon does not have any effect on the extent to which the surrounding space is distorted. If you have a point at any distance from, say, the Sun, it’ll be distorted exactly as much as if it were that same distance from a solar-mass black hole.

It was off the top today!!

It’s on page 2! I took a screenshot of this historic occasion.

IIRC, Guy stuff spanned 23 pages =~ 1,114 posts.

The LOTR monster is well over 1,500 posts (and something like 300,000 veiws, too, I think.) Kinda makes me glad I got in back on page 2 or 3!

Opps, page 4.

Guy Stuff was back in the UBB days. UBB didn’t have problems with long threads per se, but it did have a problem with total database size, and we were pushing the margin on that one, so we ditched it. The earlier versions of vBulletin had no problems with database size, but threads started getting flaky at around ten pages. Current versions of vBulletin, apparently, also do not have problems with long threads, at least not yet.

Why, paint me blue and call me a smurf! The board background color is pink!

Well, at least in the screenshot. The #F1F1F1 (remember?) got mangled to #F7F3F7 by the 256-color gif conversion. If Mister V used an 8bit graphics card driver with a similarily malignant algorithm it would explain the faded pink Board Background Color that I mentioned. Maybe he reads this, it’s too silly for a bump or an e-mail. But I’ll stop the pink jokes. It would make me go completely insane too.

Guy Stuff - Ah! That brings back fond memories. Pass the Cheesy Poofs braaap and get me a beer!!

Good times, good times…
