In the past, pre-upgrades, a thread went to 12 or 13 pages, and was closed because of the limitations that existed at the time.
I think that was a good thing which has gone by the wayside.
Closing pit threads at 12 or 13 generally let a thread die and not devolve into the vicious morass we see all too often lately.
I think it also benefits the board by not making a single thread so long that it takes forever to find some information that one once saw.
I don’t know if it would create a great deal more work for the mods, but I think going back to a 12-13 page limit in threads would allow for certain threads to die a well deserved death while allowing other threads to be more easily searched.

Well long threads don’t slow down the board now but some threads do drag on too long after all has been said. If you are speaking about any thread in particular I would use the “report to moderator” button with your suggestion.

12 pages means 600 posts. There’s never been a Pit thread that long. The longest pit threads are:
561 His4Ever, JerseyDiamond and Joe_Cool are hypocrites.
529 God forbid we teach our kids
480 The Free-For-All Meltdown & Pile-On Thread
477 Unban Satan!
468 Don’t let your kids pay for the delivery pizza
453 Don’t be such a Jerk, Ukulele Ike
437 Spiritus Mundi
427 THIS IS WAR DAMMIT
422 Jack-ass Dean Tyler
421 Is there a such thing a the “gay gene”?
421 His4Ever, why are you telling lies about your Deity?
400 Google Search Mod Orgy!
394 What the fuck is wrong with these homophobic bigots?
389 Veganinanitarianism
380 DavidB should resign or be replaced.
377 Stupid fucks who believe in magic.

It’s not that it slows the board down.
It’s that in the pit, it diffuses threads that would otherwise devolve into pointless bile spewing.

In the Pit, as I understand it, when a thread becomes too pointlessly bilious, it’s closed regardless of length. But if a thread just happens to be long, but is still within “acceptable” parameters for its forum, then what’s the problem?

What is the Guiness Book record for ‘message board’ thread length. Seems to me one time somone pointed out one on a Volkswagen board about some VW dealer in Atlanta IIRC. But I can’t find it now.
