If LOTR had been written by somebody else is longer. But the “a” thread may have beaten it.
The “a” thread was by far the longest. It was 109 pages when it was finally put out to pasture.
And we were all set to take it to 200.

You already know it was the thoroughly pointless, glorious “a” thread - but I can’t resist pointing it out again so I can say hello to my old “a” pals.

IIRC the old software crapped out after a certain amount of [pages due to indexing problems. We’ve had an upgrade since then which sorts out the problem. I could be mis-remembering though.
yojimbo’s right. The older version of the board software couldn’t handle threads longer than about five pages or so. Following the Winter of Our Missed Content, the software was upgraded, and the new version can evidently handle much longer threads.
This thread is better suited for ATMB. I’ll move it for you.

koeeoaddi [sub]damn, it’s been too long, I had to scroll up to double-check the spelling – I used to know “o-double-e-o-a” without checking – sniff[/sub] – SBS – great to see you, I’ve seen you around but haven’t had a chance to say hi.
Dropping the 47 was an homage, koeeoaddi – remember, we talked about it at one point (somewhere in the 60s, as I recall – page count, not decade) – because the 47 is silent. Y’all agreed I should just drop it – and I finally emailed a mod and made it happen.
So, anyone seen Osiris around?
Hey Twicks, koeeoaddi (I had to double check the spelling too, which I used to be able to do without thinking), SBS, and all my other a-thread buddies - I’ve missed our daily contact. I’d never been in a chat room before, and this being my first experience with a message board, it was really fun to be a part of and I still haven’t quite recovered from the shock of it ending. In retrospect however we should all be most grateful to the mods for allowing it to go to 100 pages and more. Special recognition is due Twickster for having the most posts in the thread (“some kind of messed up” as some wiseacre said in the morning after pit thread), and to koeeoaddi for having the glory of posting the message that clicked over to the 100th page. Maybe next January on the anniversary of the “accident” the mods might allow an a-thread reunion for a few pages. Cheers to everyone, I miss you all. Long live the “a”!
I still worry about Biohazard with his bad job, small town cop problems, and his hot dates, and I miss the Hawaiian weather reports and computer game updates from Osiris, and Twicks I hope we’ll get a chance to meet at a Philly doper dinner sometime.

Watcher, your mention of of wondering what happened to Biohazard reminds me –
Does anyone else wonder how the crises, mundane or major, that inspire people to rant/bitch/seek advice/complain/whatever actually come out?? In the heat of the moment someone posts something like, ‘Help! My basement is full of radioactive kangaroos! How do I get rid of them?’
And then helpful Dopers jeer and mock at him. Well, sometimes they do. But others offer what sound like helpful advice…and then the thread just dies. Did the OP try out the advice? Did it work? If it failed, did he find another solution or has he simply learned to live with a basement full of glowing marsupials?
I wonder about these things when my insomnia keeps me awake – and now I have no ‘a’ thread to babble on to keep me distracted. 
Hey, I’m on the other side of some of these threads. Does anyone care what happened with my ‘having to work all the overtime because I don’t have children’ crisis? Or my brother’s problem with the slightly illegal tenant who was slightly blackmailing him?
I suppose I could search for those threads and post an update – but that would drag up an entire thread, and at least the first one was very long and got rather heated in places.
Maybe we need an ‘update’ thread? If your problem got solved and you can cover it in just a message without it being likely to spawn a new thread, you could stick it into this one thread.
Maybe I should start one, and see what happens. But – which forum? Should all updates go where the original thread was? Or one ‘update’ per appropriate forum?
