May the rant be with you (May 2012 rant thread)

Offers you a (((HUG))).

Do you want the detailed explaination, or the practical one?

I’ll do the practical one…

I think that you should feed Neko canned food twice a day. Your vet probably has pouches of kidney food. Start free feeding him kibble. I know that you used to have him on a diet, but now you need to encourage him to eat.

Canned food won’t make a cat fat, its the grain in the kibble that does it.

Canned food is stinky, and old cats start losing their sense of smell

Not a rant, but I’m constantly irritated that this idiotic shooting in Florida is such big fucking news. Some dipshit shoots a kid and I have to read about it even in the business section? How many threads do we need about this case? There’s a thread in GD, “Did Trayvon Martin have the right to stand his own ground?”… really? You couldn’t post that in any of the other 34 Martin/Zimmerman threads?

Comic Con is over in Dallas, it’s not in Fort Worth. You can plan on taking an hour and a half to get there, and another hour and a half back. Ask me how I know.

The Botanic Gardens is mostly free (you have to pay for some gardens), and so are the Water Gardens. There’s the Log Cabin Museum and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Both museums require tickets, though. The Science museum also has an IMAX theater and a planetarium, for an additional charge of course, and sometimes the shows are great and sometimes they suck.

The kids across the street have been playing a game all afternoon - I think the name of it is, “Scream as loud as you can every 30 seconds.”

Kitten food is very high in protein and is NOT good for adult cats, especially ones with kidney issues. Add the canned food twice daily and free feed kibble like flatlined said.

Hail ranging from 3/8" to 5/8". Makes me very happy I park in an underground garage.

We bought our house almost three years ago, and we specifically looked for a house with a garage or room to put one up - I LOVE our garage! All winter long, I park in the garage and don’t have to worry about our cars getting hit on the street like they used to. When it hails, I park in the garage and don’t worry about it. When I hear a screech on the street, my car’s in the garage and I don’t worry about it.

I can’t free feed. There’s a second cat who will, guaranteed, eat whatever I put down before Neko gets to it. And Shiva doesn’t need any more weight, either. Plus, the vet said it wasn’t a good idea to feed Shiva the prescription food since he doesn’t have issues with his kidneys.

What the vet gave me was Science Diet A/D, and he said give Neko half a can a day in addition to his regular kibble portions. He didn’t eat everything at feeding time this evening, but I’m hoping to give him some more before bed time. I got enough for a month, at the end of which I’ll take him back in for weighing. He certainly purred enough while eating it.

Hey, internet fuckheads, if you don’t ship to Canada, how about you don’t label one of your fields “Zip Code/Postal Code”? Also, would it kill you to put a note that you don’t ship to Canada somewhere before I’ve filled in a whole bunch of information? Thanks, shitheads.

My college alumni office has called me four times in the past two weeks looking for donations (I assume, since I never answer). Looking back at my call history, they have called 17 times in the last four months.

Am I crazy or is this bordering on harassment? I need to just answer the phone and tell them to stop bothering me and that if I was ever considering giving any money, I’m sure as hell not now after the blitz of phone calls, but I don’t want to bitch at the poor student worker who is likely at the other end.

Then be nice about it, but be honest and firm.

“Look, I know you’re just the unlucky person who gets to call me about this, but this is seriously pissing me off. If I had any interest in donating money, that’s gone now because I’m so tired of being harassed. What I would like you to do is to take my name off the list if that is possible, and regardless of whether it is or not, I would like you to pass on that I’m extremely unhappy with the whole situation and I need it to stop. Thanks. <click>”

Done! Thanks for this suggestion. The rest of the bush seems to be doing OK; there’s even some new growth (tiny leaves) under the scraped area.

It’s a mixed bag for this post.
The lawn guy finally did show up, about two hours later than he said. They did a decent job on the actual mowing, although he left a section around one of the trees because he said there was a bunch of poison ivy there. I have my doubts, since it’s been there for years and we’ve never had a problem with it.
We talked about what else needed doing and he said he had time to do some of it right then, so they got busy on the trimming and cutting stuff down along the fence.
So we’re respectable now.
The rant part is, he was supposed to come back the next day, to haul away the stuff he cut (which is neatly stacked, I’ll say that), and put some salt solution on the area with the poison ivy. He didn’t show. I figure he’ll get here at some point, because he hasn’t been paid all the money we agreed on. I just wish he’d show up when he says he will.

The upshot is, what he does, he does pretty well. I’ll have to figure out if I can live with the iffy scheduling.

I have to admit I got a kick out of watching them, a bit. I showed him the daffodil, since I didn’t want the leaves chopped down before it has a chance to nourish the bulb. He was oh-so-careful to move them out of the way and trim around it. Then there was one yellow ribbon left on the front tree. It should have been thrown away with the rest of them, but my husband missed it. They trimmed the tree branches around it, with great care not to touch the one it was on.
I think that says something about their work ethic.

I just wish to heck he’d show up when he says he will, dang it!

I’ve just spent two hours fighting my HP wireless printer…after uninstalling and reinstalling, then reinstalling HP’s ultra-super-special Solution Center, the software reported that a bunch of ports were being blocked by Norton’s firewall. I ended up turning off an “automatic file/printer sharing control” hidden in the firewall settings, and everything is working fine now. I’m just not terribly clear as to whether or not this is compromising my computer.

One day- just once- before I pass off into the night, prior to going shopping I will remember to clear enough room on the table to put the groceries when I carry them in from the car.

I’ve been using computer printers for God only knows how long now, and I’m still amazed any time a printer actually does what I’ve requested of it.

Bonus points for if you stop walking past the ice chest that someone put blue ice in before driving half an hour to the grocery store…and stop whinning when my ice cream is all melty.

Not that I would ever do something like that.

My rant is the fire. I hope you folks don’t think that I’m not taking this serious. I am. This is a really big thing, people have lost their homes, people have been hurt. I’m not at risk for any of that, so I feel free to complain about the bother here. I would never say this in rl…

But…its great that the firefighters have set up their headquarters at the high school a mile down the road. The vans from the TV stations have amazed me. One of them has a tower that must be at least 30 feet tall.

My little bedroom community probably has more fire fighter related people than residents.

This should be a good thing, right? Yes, it is. There is NO way that fire control will allow the 247 homes here to be burnt out.

The dust…OMG…the dust from them dragging fire breaks…cough, cough.

Our little community mostly has paved roads. They were never meant to deal with all the heavy trucks. There is only one paved road leading in and out, the road is already beat to heck, and we have a traffic problem.

I never thought that I’d live to see traffic problems so bad here that I’d need to get up early.

Oh, and I’m going to Nebraska next weekend. While I’m very sure that there are lots of nice people and nice places in Nebraska, I’m going to visit the pipeline. My sweetie is so proud that the crews are doing well that he has to show it off.

*finds bucket list and crosses off “go to the middle of nowhere, look at a big hole in the ground”

It was classic - she breezed right through the red light at a busy intersection while gabbing on her cellphone, nearly creaming the guy making a left turn in front of me.

Since the intersection is red light camera-enforced, she will be getting a nice $95 ticket in the mail to remind her that being a moronic self-centered twit can be costly.

It was the best example of unconscious cellphone driving I’d seen since the time in Houston when a woman turned into an oncoming traffic lane and then had to do a frantic one-handed avoidance maneuver, never stopping her cellphone conversation for a second.

Having one of those weeks when lots of little frustrating things happen.

First, the council came to empty the rubbish bin on thursday, and unaccountably took the bin with them. So now we have no bin.

Second, I’m trying to buy a camping stove- using reward vouchers, which don’t work. The one I’d really like is also apparently out of stock, even though it’s showing up as in stock on the website, and I just spend a full half hour being sent round 3 phone lines to try and get a working voucher code. Of course, the first number I dialed was actually the right one, I just got an idiot on the phone who decided that wasn’t their department, even though it was. I now have to wait til tomorrow to try again, by which time I might not actually get said stove before I go camping on saturday. Due to their system, I’ve already effectively ‘spent’ the vouchers, to get a voucher for use in the camping department, so I really don’t want to just buy another one at this point if I can possibly avoid it.

Third, my sleeping habits are utterly shot to hell, and I’m not getting to sleep until about 4am, and am only just waking up around midday.

Fourth, the person who said they’d babysit my pet mice while I go camping (from this weekend) offered online, asked what days it’d be, then… nothing. I replied online, then texted her a few days later to double check it’d be OK on those dates, and had no reply. I really need to know today, when I can probably get someone else to do it (someone I’d rather not ask, as I’ve already asked him to look after my pet axolotls, and adding mice to that last minute seems a bit bloody cheeky). I’ve not got many mouse-sitter options, because most of my friends who like animals have cats, which my mice get a bit freaked out by the smell of. She’s really local, and really likes animals- and has several pets herself, so she’d be great if she’d just be less slack.

Gahhhhh…

Oh BTW, if anyone needs an even worse slug mental image:

[spoiler] Last year, when I was making soup, I got the hand blender out, and just happened- unusually for me when it’s just been stored in the cupboard*- to glance at the blades to check they were clean.

Nestling behind the blades was a 3" slug. A 3" long slug I was seconds away from causally blending into my chunky vegetable soup.

You’re welcome

  • Unusual back then- now I check the blender every. Single. Time.
