“To this day, no Cincinnati broadcaster has used the WKRP call letters for a real radio station, but that is about to change after a low-power Raleigh, North Carolina station put the famous letters on sale and someone in the Cincinnati market purchased them.”
Sorry, I can’t understand the lyrics in the end credits. ![]()
Hopefully the new station will have a strong news department – there’s that Buckeye News Hawk Award to be won!

BooGeR!
“As god is my witness….”
If you ever do start understanding them is when you have to worry.
As a former broadcaster. I don’t know why any radio station would want to use those calls. The TV WKRP was a joke of a station, infested with talents who were lunatics, shady sales people and incompetent management.
Not unlike many of the radio stations I worked for, starting in 1971.
But seriously, it’s been almost 50 years since that sitcom has been on TV, and it was never that popular, so what’s the point of the connection in 2026?
By the way, there is an actual (and very old) Cincinnati radio station with the calls WKRC, sharing the calls with a sister TV station.
I’d say there’s a staunch cult following. Plus, the whole Jennifer vs Bailey thing will probably never be resolved.
Certainly, I still consider myself a big fan of the show.
In its second season, it reached #22 in the Nielsen ratings, which isn’t a huge hit, but put it in the top third of prime-time network shows, with comparable ratings to Barney Miller, Charlie’s Angels, and The Love Boat that season. But, CBS moved the show’s time slot repeatedly over the course of its run, which undoubtedly didn’t help it build an audience.
That said, yes, we’re now 40+ years removed from the show’s first run, and to the extent that anyone fondly remembers the show, they’re likely going to be in their late 50s or older now. If the callsign is used for an oldies or classic rock station, it’d seem to be the right audience.
Radio stations, (Frazier+) TV stations(MTM+) and Newspaper++++ offices were common backgrounds for sitcoms
