Mayo vs. Miracle Whip

As I said upthread, I don’t hate Miracle Whip (nor do I particularly dislike it, either), but I honestly haven’t found one single application I prefer it in to mayo or tarted up mayo.

Jumbo (bologna), wonder bread and miracle whip sandwiches-a staple growing up

Miracle Whip makes a boring turkey sandwich wonderful.

That is my understanding too, says the person from Illinois. Who doesn’t mind mayo but will always choose MW over it. If I’m buying a sandwich at Subway or Jimmy Johns to take home I will get it plain so I can put MW on it.

My first wife’s family, who were all MW people (and they may both be good for different purposes but there was never mayo in the house, just MW and I don’t personally know any mayo houses where you’ll find MW) were all from Vancouver, WA, born and bred.

I forgot to mention: When I was a kid, I loved Cheez Whiz and Miracle Whip sandwiches!

Miracle Whip. Real mayo just tastes too fatty or something. We use light MW instead of the regular or fat free kind. To me, using real mayo is like getting used to skim milk and then trying to drink whole.

They have different applications. BLT - Mayo. Turkey sandwich - MW. Egg salad, tuna salad, shrimp salad, macaroni salad, chicken salad, deviled eggs - Mayo.

Now that I think about it, the only thing I use MW on is a turkey sandwich.

ETA - now I want to make chicken salad. DAMMIT!!

Miracle Whip is good in one thing: tuna salad. It allows me to not need to add sweet relish, and I don’t really miss the fat.

It’s still better than any knock-off sandwich dressing, though.

EDIT: I don’t get people liking MW with turkey. They’re both sweet.

Except they don’t add sugar to skim milk. It’s closer to what I did as a kid with a milk allergy. My parents got me a certain brand of liquid non-dairy creamer, one that is sickening sweet to my modern tastebuds. Because I used that, I absolutely hated the taste of milk when I lost the allergy*.

*I do indeed wonder about that–but I was tested. The right way, with the pinpricks. Those allergy shots seemed to work. Only this past year have I had problems with milk again, and some of that’s clearly lactose intolerance.

I had a similar experience, although I didn’t really “not like” Miracle Whip. It was ok, but I didn’t love it. I never had real mayo until I was an adult, and it was like someone turned the lights on. I never ate Miracle Whip again.
